I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, it seems sometimes like, well we've got you stopped now anyway, so by god, I'm gonna find something wrong, cause I can. Hell of a big stretch between safety concerns and some of the dumm a$$ tickets handed out. The respect for the job these folks are supposed to be doing for all of our best interests really takes a licking when a few morons take these issues to the obvious conclusion that the money is the issue. And thats too bad, puts a negative spin on a positive effort.

it can happen to anyone........ One of the dealers that came to the event was stopped and given a $130.00 ticket because the break away trailer brake battery was dead/not working........... This was a brand new trailer, never used before.....how would someone know, without actually testing it, and no one checks the break away every trip!!! I actually tested mine while it was at the shop the day before we left, and while out there, thought i'd give it a pull, and guess what.... Dead battery!!!! Jus' sayin'

I don't know about the other manufacturers, but my enclosed triton has a 3 light display on the battery housing inside, yellow indicates charging from the tow unit, green when it is hooked up but truck not running, and red if the battery needs servicing or is dead.

They absolutely ARE charged by the tow vehicle...

Your 'hot' feed from the truck charges them, if yours doesnt, your truck or trailer is wired wrong...Systems might be stupid, but are still the law, so you may as well get yours working.

Almost all new trailes today have that same system. Hit up any trailer dealer and they will be able to get it for you. Its a simple swap...it doesnt work any better, but it does show you what is going on when you are hooked up. It also allows you to test the battery when you are unhooked.

we use a lot of trailers for work and these batteries always seem to mess up,problem being is that they sit for long periods of time and the battery dies and on top of that they are outside in the cold etc...We have now put a small solar panel on each trailer that charges the battery when it is sitting,kind of like a trickle charger would do.It was a quick fix about 150.00 and it has saved a lot of hassles.

I inadvertently tested the breakaway switch on my 5th wheel holiday trailer last summer on holidays....turned a sharp corner in Edmonton and the cable caught on something in the box popping it out and screeched me to a halt. felt like somewhat of an idiot getting out of my truck in the middle of traffic and hooking it back up....

Depends if you want to slam into a trailer that's stopped, or one coming your way at 50 kmh.

It's funny how police have to hand out tickets to make people aware of what is safe and what is not....this thread proves it in a lot of ways.

Kinda like where the avalanche safety stuff is probably gonna go. Mark my words.

Warnings are like a get out of jail card in monopoly. It never sticks, and people push their luck and see if they can "sneak by" next time.
