Must be the late 80's because our kids and their friends didn't wear helmets until they were in sanctioned races in the late '80's.

There really were no pussies nor bubble wrapping in those days!

I would argue that not wearing a helmet makes you stupid rather than tough.

Could also argue that a few scraps and bumps made you ride smarter!!

Sure, but scrapes and bumps happen when you are wearing the gear too. Why would you invite further injury by not wearing the right gear?

That's why that was then and this is now, I didn't own a pedal bike helmet in the sixties, but my kids in the late eighties and 90's had helmets and wasn't long that I gave them gloves as they progressed...
A few years later as they entered racing, they had full gear on...

Should see the gear now for motocross...but nothing wrong with a bit of enlightened education in safety....
