I am VERY Happy to Report that the Sledders that stayed here in Blue River had a Outstanding Time !!

I will be doing a Avalanche Report this afternoon

I look forward to seeing Lots of Sledders here in Blue River this Year !!

The News is reporting Blue River is in for another 10-20 cms. EXCELLENT !

The Avalanche Forecast so far is " HIGH "

Its all over the News !! Avalanche Danger !! in the Back Country !!

It snowed about 14 cms today and the are calling for another 40 cms.

Please Play safe out ther !!

ALPINE....HIGH !!!

TREELINE...HIGH !!!

BELOWTREELINE...CONDIDERABLE !!!

Travell Advisory...

The Main Concerns for the Region is the Cornice Formation and Slab Development at Ridgeline in the Alpine. There is enough Snow and Wind for Avalanches from these features to Run almost full path. Avoiding the smooth Steep unsupported features and Big Open Bowls below ridgelines will be a good approach for the Weekend. Staying to the good quality snow out of the stiff windslabs will give the best Sledding and Skiing and also improve your Margin of Safety.

Avalanche Activity....

Limited number of natural Avalanches up to size 3 ( enough to destroy a pickup ) and natural Cornices from a variety of aspects in the Alpine.The Cycle of Avalanches will continue with loading tonight and tomorrow. As the temperatures cool off and the winds drop the Cycle will begin to wind down by Sunday. Skiiers were able to trigger slabs on Steep unsupported rolls at treeline in isolated features.

Weather North Columbia ( Blue River )....

Locally Heavy presipation in the North Columbia tonight. Moderate presipation on Saturday . Mountain top winds south easing to 50 -60 km/h on Saturday. After rising today freezing levels to at or near 1000 meters by Saturday morning.

Snowpack.....

Up to 30 cms of new Snow overnight settleing well with warmer Temps.
Some Cracking from Skiing Observed , with Moderate shears found 30 cms down and the Dec. 5 Layer of mixed forms found 127 cms down on a North East aspect produced a hard but sudden shear with a stability test.

Blue River well....We did Not get the Snow that they were saying We should get ....

But some of the Trails are groomed and that is a Bonus !!

AtTreeline and Below , a Deep Weakness of Sugary Faceted Snow Overlying

a Rain Crust Buried Early in December , has the Potential to be Triggered by

light loads from Weak Areas , such as Skiers and Sledders around Rocks , and

Propagate into VERY Large Avalanches !

This Weakness has been Responsible for Fatal Avalanches already and it is

Expected to Linger for the Foreseeable Future !

Travel Advisory....

Exercise Caution when Riding Cut Blocks ! Or Exposed Treeline Slopes !

Also keep in mind that Weak Windslabs are Lurking on the Northeast side

of Ridge Crests in Alpine and open Treeline Areas !

On Monday , Heavy Presipitation , Warm Tempetures , and Strong Winds

are Expected to increase Avalanche Danger !!


AVALANCHE ACTIVITY....

The Monashees got a BIG Dump on Thursday , which resulted in a Avalanche Cycle of small spontaneous naturally occuring and Skier Triggered Slab Avalanches.

These Avalanches involved the Top 30-50 cms. of recent storm snow.

In other parts of the region , light amounts of Storm was Sloughing readily in Steep Terrain !!

SNOWPACK.....

For sometime now They have been Warning about a persistent Weakness of Sugary Faceted Snow overlying a Rain Crust that was buried early in December and is now down approximatley 70-140 cms. at elevations Treeline and Below !

This suggest that Skiers and especially Sledders can Trigger Large Slab Avalanches !!
Several Weaknesses also exist within the Top 50 cms. of Recent Storm Snow, especially where Windslabs have formed.

ALPINE.....CONSIDERABLE

TREELINE...CONSIDERABLE

BELOW TREELINE....MODERATE

It is Snowing Pancakes again right now Blue River has seen Snow Everyday for the last 40 Days ...( I lost count ...LOL ) I think the Avalanche Danger could rise to HIGH by Tomorrow here !!
