So I go to get a quote on insuring my hubbies banshee and my little gio dirt bike.......his cost him about $8000 to buy, mine cost about $500.....His insurance was quoted $150 less than mine...WHY is my bike $150 more to insure that his quad????
The Insurance lady said...and I quote, "because it's a bike", very matter of factly to top it all off.
What the heck am I missing here?
Also, she said that "ultimatly" there is no need to have collision on them.....Why? her response (and yes, I am serious) was, "well if you are getting into a collision, you probably won't be around to collect".
What do you guys think....collision or no collision...explain...AND, ya, why the heck is my bike so expensive to insure, because it's a bike?

In my head
Based on her comments I would suggest finding a new insurance company.

Does she think it's a street bike?

No , she is well aware that it is a cheap little basicly "no name" dirt bike....a few others quoted me higher as well too??????? My driving record (I don't know if this comes into play here?) is MUCH better than his as well...I dunno, or understand.??

I'm still shopping around, just confused as heck?

Insurance is done on a risk value. Bikes per say have a higher percentage of involvement in accidents.

Well Said Snotty... I Too Would Look For A Different Insurance Company After Comments Like That. I Don't Think The Insurace Industry Has Caught Up With The Quad Sector Yet, But I'm Sure The Motorbikes Doo Pose A Higher Risk, Anyway...... Faster, More Nimble, More Risks Taken, No Doubt More Accidents??

Exactly, They consider a dirt bike a race bike regardless the value. I was paying $860 a year for my crf450 and if I had headlights, signal lights and a horn on that bad boy my insurance would have been $260 a year. Right now we are lucky that we pay such cheap insurance on the 800 quads cause they are still classed as utility vehicles But I fear that will change too soon :(

Wow, that's a huge savings, I thing I would consider the upgrades for that kind of money?

You will need an "Air Horn" to catch their attention...lol...
Go with the big trucker signal lights so your seen.

Look pretty funny trying to signal before the double or honking the horn for another racer to get out of your way. "beep beep" Oh and the pit razzan you would get. :D

As far as the collision is concerned, I look at it considering the value of the vehicle and what cost I am willing to pay if I wreck it. I don't have collision on my sons Polaris. It is a $1200 machine TOPS, minus the $500 deductable and I am down to $700. I am not willing to pay and extra $150 a year for a chance at $700. My Brute is a different story. I am not willing to take a 6-7 grand loss on that if I wreck it.

One other factor in insurance rates for bikes, if you have never insured a bike before, you fall into the class of being a new driver, regardless of driving history. Bikes are in a league of their own, so if you want to play, your gonna pay!
