what to use to make a red jerry can black?

Yes, the only way to truly colour plastic is to dye it, otherwise the paint will just peel. If you are desperate you could colour the whole thing with jiffy marker, this will stain the outer plastic a little, but not like a true dye.

You can buy some kits aftermarket for dying vinyl and plastic. Sorry, don't have a link.

I think this would be your best bet. I marked a couple jerry cans "premium" "mixed", etc. a few years ago with a black sharpy. It's still there as prominent as day one. It would take an hour or so, but you'd be better off versus painting it.

Painting jerry cans doesn't work well. All the expansion and contraction they go through causes the paint to crack and peel.

tremclad paint will peel, i did mine with that and it started to come off almost immediatly, but i didn't prep it very well....

How about getting it sprayed by someone who does box liners that stuff is flexible and is good against grease and gas. Plus you can pick the color you want. :d

was going to suggest the sme thing, i know it will hold up to gas.....ask the box of my truck. though i'm not sure it would withstand the expanding and contracting of the tank.

i think your best bet would be having a bag made for it, empty it out take it into an upholstery place and see if they can make you a bag out of canvas or nylon.

have it made with a zip up part at the spout to cover it but allow access

yup me too,, first 2 days I was like ok this could work if i dont scratch it,,, 3rd 4th day its coming off in chunks,, its the expanding of the plastic for sure,,

but again still looks good from 10ft away lol,, I always take my fuel caddy off after the trail...


armour guard is a interesting thought you can buy it by the can,, maybe I will try and fix my mess...

Be aware that some undercoating/bedliner has solvents like acetone in them that might eat the plastic or make it brittle. Having a brittle gas can would be like putting your gas in a glass container......good until it gets a crack in it....... then bye bye spare gas......
