Polaris Front Diff

Hey guys Ive got an 04.5 Polaris Sportsman 400 and i had purchased a used diff and I was wondering if there was a way to bench test it to see if it works?
Or do I actually need to be driving it for it to engage?

take a 12 volt battery and some alagator clips. Connect the positive to one wire and the negative to the other. you will be able to here the dif engage. You can turn the pinion shaft by hand and see the splines move.
