Bought my uncles boat after many years of using and abusing for free. An old Grew 18' with a mercruiser inboard and stern drive. Went to put it in the water and it wouldn't start.

Start drinking beer.

I went through it and have no spark. Went through the cap, rotor, plugs. My brother told me to run a wire from the starter solenoid to the positive side of coil and that didnt work.

Next was to run a jumper wire from positive of battery to the coil. Bingo!!
Now to find the problem. Two wires run to the positive side of the coil, one from the solenoid and I'm not sure where the other is from. Anyone help me out?

Thanks tex. I assume the alternator is fine along with that wire.

Is there a relay or anything between the solenoid and the coil?

Explain ignition switch further please. Is it located between solenoid and coil somewhere?

Yes ignition switch feeds power to start , run.

Might be a fuse somewhere.

Pretty hard to diagnose it without looking at it.

when you turn the key to run there should be power at the coil , so check the the switch to see if it's powered up and stays powered up when you turn the key to start

so grab a beer get test light , it is sometimes easier to pull the switch to test it
