This is my first attempt at a rebuild and im looking for any hints or tips. Im mechanically inclined but never did a rebuild. PTO side piston has a hole in it. had to drive it home about 11 km. Thanks in advance for your help.:)

Drain the coolant, use a vac pump or similar to prevent coolant from getting in the crankcase. Post a pic of the piston on here - may help pinpoint the cause of failure (bad gas, deto, etc). Was the motor stock? How many miles on it? Pistons don't just get holes in them for no reason. If you rebuild without determining & repairing the cause, you'll be rebuilding again very shortly. If you have no way to measure piston to wall clearance, rig gap and cylinder taper - you are likely better off leaving it to a professional. You should look at the crank, reed boots, etc, etc. No point in fixing it twice...
