Winter Tire Decisions

Hey all, found you guys while researching tires. Helps you all are local too instead of getting a consensus from US "winters."

I have a 2010 4Runner that I use to travel to the rigs. Probably 70-80% of the time will be on the highway (~900km one way!) but the remainder will be on the lease roads. Previous years I've had no problems running a dedicated winter tire but this year I'm concerned about a dedicated set getting beat to ch!t from the gravel/dirt roads to the rig.

Looking at a few options:
1) Duratrac
2) Nokian Hakk LT
3) Toyo WLT1

Just put on my 3rd set, this time deticated winters, studded. Nothing but positive things to say about them.

Ordered up some Duratracs. Now just trying to figure out if I want to stud them or not. You guys in the oilfield, how are the lease roads? Curious if the gravel roads will rip out the studs or if that's only at higher speeds you get that.

Hi speeds will not rip out studs. Incorrectly installed studs will work there way out. Check your tire when you frist get them done to see if any studs are not seated fully. If there is any have them removed and reinstalled.

Tomorrow, First set of Duratrac's with studs going on my work truck... My truck sits alot on location with all good gravel roads to location so far. Last winter was on some ice roads, there is where they would of worked well. Lots of highway driving so I will post later on how they stand up..

Buddy of mine work in the oilfield and has them on his work truck. When I asked him if they were good tire , he replied there OK. , I get flat from the gravel quite a bit. How about on ice, they would be good if they were studded and they seem quite good offroad too. The grippy thread design of the Dura trac seems to work better than the silent armor Looks like an awesome tire but I think I'd keep them on just for winter, and have them studded. Still a toss-up between cooper discovery m+s or these duratracs.

Just had a set of Duratracs installed. This is my first set of these, chose these because of all the great reviews here. They were the last set I could find in town. I had to jump up to the next size as my stock size was on back order 1600 units. Obviously a popular tire. They seem to be better than my BF all terrains so far.

I run studded Cooper M+S on all my trucks. I've had about 10 sets of them now. Amazing traction on the worst of icy highways.

I run Nokian WR. Lots of gravel and they seem to stand up pretty well, about 15,000 km on them last winter and probably the same this winter and with any luck i will get a third winter out of them. I think any winter tire will give you better traction than an all season on ice and snow.

I have run a set of Goodyear Wrangler A/T's on my truck for the last couple years through the winter and have had excellent traction on all road conditions. They are decent for offroad as well. I have around 40,000km on them now and they still have plenty of life left.

i am running goodyear duro tracs for about a year now and so far so good (no studs). the tire guys at work say these tires will last longer than bfg all terain tires will. we run in the mines and the road conditions are not the best. hope that helps.

Just installed a set of Goodyear Territorys on my 2008 GMC 2500. So far they seem to have lots of traction in the snow. Hope they do good on ice.

Installed duratrac's about 6 weeks ago. So far they are great on the ice and snow. No studs.

tried the coopers but they dont last for mileage. Duratracs are awesome! there studable and they last and there good if the snow is deep! like up to the bumper deep! love them. Im trying the new toyo on my Denali just for shits and giggles but i know the duratracs are an awesome tire! 87000kms on some of the worst roads imaginable.

check out fierce attitude M/T. i really like them thus far 0 problems very quiet for an M/T and they have worked fantastic on snow/ice and i do believe they are a ten ply load rating E as well. i like them thus far
