Last year I found a 2002 Audi TT Roadster....1.8L Turbo with twin intercoolers, 225 hp with AWD.

Cruising at 125 it still gets 33 mpg...

The only goofy thing is an alarm goes off every two hours of continuous driving, seems the German's figure you should stop and rest every two hours....

Good stuff, keep the replies coming!

And just for the record there is no fuel station in Hilliard... Just a post office. I meant Alberta diesel in general. My old bosses son had a Jetta TDI and he was throwing in injectors every 60 000 km and went through chit tons of fuel filters and pumps. If it wasn't for hearing that, I'd be buying one.

First i've heard off crap diesel in Alberta, have 2 diesels now and have always had since 1997 never ever a fuel related problem. Most problems are caused by contaminated trucks, moisture in tanks, poor handling, etc.

Change filters frequently and you are set.

If you ca throw the cool factor out the window while my GF commutes in the GTI I run around in a 2000 hyundi accent and surprisingly I love it. Not nearly as gutless as you would expect and the 5 speed actually gives her some jump.....and I get 600kms to 35 bucks in gas

That's the exact same commute I have had over the last 6 years. I would get a small car myself. I drive a 2005 Honda civic, now pushing 370k. Have always wondered if I should get a tdi vw but I have heard expensive stories that make me cringe.

Wife had an 05 Golf TDI, 55mpg avg without a problem. Sold it when the kidlets came along but would buy another in a second. did one trip from Edmonton to Kimberley BC and back on 90litres of fuel with a ski box on the roof. Tough to beat the VW diesel.

I have a 600 km round trip ( week on week off not every day ) And I drive my diesel, its good on fuel about a tank for the round trip but the cost of maintenece is way up there and if you have any issues it could be expensive! Thank god for warranty cause Last year alone would have been well over 10 000 in just repairs. I am also looking into a comuter car tho but would like to get a bit of a fun car too so its not so lame LOL. The subaru wrx are getting cheaper around 7500 to 12 000 for the mid 2000's year.

Holy crap you are only getting 600,.. I get 700km mixed highway and city, I'm about 1000km strictly highway.

My commute is around 1500km round trip. Week on - week off. I spend about 200 or so kms of that in my personal vehicle, another 200 or so kms of that in a company vehicle and the remainder in a private charter airplane. The commute gets annoying after a while, but any mode of transportation where the vehicle and/or fuel is covered by a company is a bonus. Doesn't matter how many MPG's you make it's tough to beat free!

WRONG..........

My 94 6.5 diesel has a 130L tank and I get 650km tops...but it's better than my 89 454 farmer 4 gas jobbie that gets 350km on the same size tank

wifes little c230 mercedes will run 0-60 in 5.5 seconds while getting 600+ km to a 50L tank

An old 5.4 late 90s f150. Worst mileage ever.

But actualy if you need a truck want mileage, buy a 90s GM 6.5 diesel. Good mileage. Doesn't need ultra low sulphur (in the 94 model aat least.) Cause they were made before the ffuel.

I was getting tired of putting so many miles on my duramax I decided I would buy myself a beater to cruise in and would save my pick up for sledding.

I ended up buying a 99 Mercedes Benz S500 for 3500.00.This car retailed at 120,000 and you can get them for almost nothing. It is so damn comfortable and fast that you won't worry about the crappy fuel mileage or the fact that it must run on premium.:eek:LOL

I don't mean to totally shut down your feedback, but I've heard they have big problems with the dirty fuel up here. i.e. Injectors often, as well as fuel filters and pumps more often. Not sure about that one.
We have a VW Jetta TDI deisel with 175000 on it that my wife drives 110k a day and no problems from new and probably the most comfy i have drove. Looking at a new one to replace it. Always use Howes and garaged in winter. Only problem is have to go to Edmonton for service.

The wife and I do 130 km a day to west Edmonton in a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. 30 mpg and a very nice ride. The AWD is nice in the winter.

I think you'll find most people having issues with the vw diesels are running them as city commuters and the guys running 60 plus kms a day aren't having near as many

my buddy has a tdi jetta and it gets 50mpg and has 350k, it is really a roll the dice brand. some of them have no problems but most are lemons.

the most reliable car in my my opinon is a honda, great mileage and you never hear of anyone that has had problems. i had an old prelude when I lived in the edmonton, bought it for $500 and put over a 100k of city driving on it with no repairs other than oil changes and 1 set of tires.
