Anyone running dirtbikes on the street?

Anyone here have a street legal dirtbike? I have seen a few bikes with light kits on the net. Stopped in the registery today and asked what it takes to make a dirtbike street legal.... $22.45 I came out with registration changed to motorcycle from ohv

Now I'm searching for a light kit for my husky 300 smoker. Don't imagine it would be very good on the highway, but in town it might be kinda fun.

I preferred having a bike that already was built as street legal. Had a KTM 530 exc that was the best off road bike I have been on and was street legal. Not very fun on the highway though.

I have always had a h-on for the old KTM Dukes. Not a huge fan of the new new ones....

It's really that easy? Only bring registration, insurance then fill out the form?

I have an Husky FE 350 with the lights so might as well get that too for the days I ride on gravel road shortcuts.

Ya I wouldn't want to be driving it around town that's for sure. Driving around logging roads would be the best bet.

The cop is not the problem, get in an accident and see what happens when the insurance finds out your bike frame isn't road legal...

Seems really odd that they would just change that at the registry without asking for anything.

Likely insurance wouldn't cover you in a crash as well, unless you checked with your insurance people

As stated above its way more than a simple registration change. The VIN is pre-assigned in the database as either street or off highway, it's not at the discretion of the registry clerk to choose. If by some stroke of luck your VIN is street legal then go for it. But changing from OHV to street legal requires special inspection by a certified shop and from my investigations it's very difficult to find shops that will do this.

Pretty sure the fuel tank on the v rod was plastic.

The only difference as mentioned is the vin now. The Ktm bikes are identical except the vin and lights.

I asked about the insurance and she said there will be no changes needed. I believe the nvis didnt say it's on or offroad. The only difference to the other bikes husky makes that I can see is they come with the lights/horn/ brake switch/ dot tires etc and 4 stroke.

Good thread! I asked last week when I registered my WR what it would take to become street legal... Sylvan Registries lady told me I would have to do all the required modifications (Dot tires, horn, signals, mirrors, etc.)and have an out of province inspection completed then re-register. Not sure why out of province, but thats what she said.

I had assumed I would of needed a oop inspection as well. I was In and out less than 5 mins at the registery office.

From my exp riding on ghost lake last winter, stock gearing I can probably only cruise safely at 80km/h without revving it's guts out. That being perfect for In town or gravel roads. I don't want to ruin the bike for riding off-road single track

I was looking at trading out to the husky 501 4t with factory lights otherwise as another option.

I believe she is incorrect about OOP, the inspection is more formal than that. Unless things have changed significantly...

They do need the inspection etc etc HOWEVER it really depends on who you get at the counter and where. Some don't care some do.

Well I made a quick call to Scona Cycles because I thought they had the certification to do the inspection. Their service manager said they don't get involved in this anymore however.

A few years back I researched this heavily when trying to street plate my Cannondale E440. Even though the bike was street legal in the US when it was imported to Canada the shop in Ontario chose to take the cheaper route with registration and the VIN was entered in the Canadian system as "off-highway".

I had no luck and eventually I gave because I could not get a straight answer from any registry branch I tried.

Wonder if you could get a tall enough top gear in the trans to make it reasonable to do 110-120, leave the rest alone. Not like you use that gear in the bush anyways.
