The Piston was most likely smashed apart and was in pieces down in the oil pan. 4L's are good motors, they'll still run like that.

Maybe they pulled the oil pan and pulled the piston and rod right out. It would run better that way but would have a miss, and no knock from the bad piston or bearing.
