Are there any vitamin guru's on here that can give me some insight into this.
My specialist advised me to start taking calcium supplements because of a rare spinal arthritic disease i have absolutely come to hate. getting up there in years its not a bad idea anyway i guess as i dont tend to drink a gallon of milk a day like i did 15 years ago.
My question is this and maybe someone can offer some advice, i dont have a lactose issue as i can drink milk eat cheese all that sort of thing, however popping one of these horse tabs every day has become more the norm. Trouble being about 80 % of the time after taking 1 of them, i feel sick to my stomach, ive tried different brands but they all seem to have this effect. Anyone else experience this? And if so what do you do to remedy it? other then not taking it.:)

Hmmm, Im not a vitamin specialist or taker, so take my comment with a grain of salt...It seems that taking a calcium supplement should give you the opposite effect as many stomach and heartburn tablets are primaily calcium, like Rolaids, or Tums etc. I would have to wonder if there are other ingredients in the pills you are taking that is causing this? Have a look at the label and see what else if anything is in the pills...

From the Tums Website....

TUMS is a convenient source

While your daily diet is your primary source for calcium, you don't want to take chances with possibly having a calcium deficiency. Add TUMS to your daily menu. Taking TUMS with your meals is a safe, effective and affordable way for adults and children to get more calcium. TUMS tablets are flavored, easy to chew and fast dissolving. For people who want more calcium every day — but who have trouble taking pills — TUMS can be a more pleasant, comfortable option. Find out how much calcium you should be getting every day – and how TUMS can help.

With the wifes new diet milk is not allowed. She drank it for years, really hard to change but the sacrifice is worth it. So now she munches on plain Whole Almonds from Kirkland that's in a bulk bag from Costco. 10% intake of calcium per 50g or 1/3 cup. Now I'm hooked on the dam things

When Tums first started putting calcium in their tablets, my biology instructor brought up in class that it seemed strange because the calcium would counteract the effect of the antacid. Of course this would mean that you would have to use more of it to get the desired effect......

While you are at Costco, try Kirkland Calcium Plus 600mg. They have 400 IU of Vitamin D, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese, and Copper. There is no artificial flavours or colours, no yeast, no lactose, no sodium, no sugar, and no wheat. I have been taking these for 15+ years and my bones and stomach are just fine.

You need the other things (Vitamin D and Magnesium) to help the body absorb the calcium. Good luck.

Interesting...I assumed the calcium was the ingredient that 'was' the antacid...

Basically flavoured baking soda. Calcium added later. A teaspoon of baking soda works as well as any commercial antacid....Tastes like crap though.

There are calcium chews on the market.......they come in many flavors...there like a soft toffee candy. Not that sweet but have decent flavor.......Costco has them.

I am on a the blood type diet and lactose intolerant, so the only calcium I get is from my veggies and nuts. Okra, almonds, collard greens, orange's, spinach, kelp, broccoli, blackstrap molasses, seaseme seeds, Brazil nuts, and celery are all high in calcium. You might just try adding these foods into your diet and save yourself some money on the supplements and stomach ache problems. If you still need to take a supplement, I would cut them in half and take them a couple of more times a day, instead of one large dose or even changing brands might help.

I don't know anything about vitamins, but my friends grandfather was a vitamin/herb guru/natural healing kinda guy. Milk doesn't agree with my stomach so I thought I would take calcium pills, he told me that if I didn't take magnesium with calcium there was no point in taking it. He lived to 98 so he did pretty well.
