i too have been the recipient of great care and attention from Health care workers, but unfortunately , if you don’t arrive in an ambulance , our system is a disaster from top to bottom, and is getting worse not better . So I hope she attacks it like a pit bull , once she has a complete understanding of what’s actually happening . My opinion , the unions are the problem , and way to many doctors are running a numbers game with appts rather than actually delivering care . And I think we need to go back to Regional health authorities , immediately . AHS has proven to be a failure .

I think we pretty much agree, under the caveat the rebuilding process doesn't leave the system completely broken for a period of months or years.

I can't really speak to the regional vs AHS system, I don't really remember the old regional system. I do know that in our case the QEII hospital had almost instant access to resources out of the Royal Alexandra and U of A hospitals in Edmonton. What worries me if we go back to regional units is there may be bureaucracies instituted that delay the sharing of these services between regions.

Not Sure
Her immediate job is to unite that party. By the results it looks to be evenly split between the old wild rose and old conservative members. Kenny brought them together on the message to defeat NDP but failed to unite them. I hope She has more success.

Not sure how this health care thing will be fixed but it’s really broken. My daughter’s cardiologist is up to a 9 month wait list now. So many good doctors have left the children’s hospital lately it’s unreal. She has a huge job ahead of her.

I read an article in the Calgary Herald a while back comparing AHS to Germany health care. Germany, depending how you measure quality of care is suppose to be one of the best. The similarities between Germany & Alberta made it a reasonable comparison.

The glaring difference is AHS has 10x the administration that of Germany. Conclusion was in Alberta you had a better of seeing someone from admin over a health care professional.

You can pick any province & my bet is you will find the same crap in anything that is under responsibility of the government......a plan to fix this that you can execute & can cope with a bunch of whining babies will be the difference....

They said the other day that something like $119 million if memory serves me correct is spent by AHS to people that will never see a patient. That’s incredible. Like I said in an earlier thread months ago when this topic came up my cousin who is a rural RN south of Calgary has 9 managers on her floor for 27 nurses. To me that is out of touch and she agrees with me.

I 100% agree that we have waaaay too much brass at ahs but ypu want to see horrible Healthcare, go visit the east coast.
Impossible to find a family doctor, people dying in the ambulances waiting to get into the hospital, full days waiting in emerg. We are blessed compared to them.

The whole system needs an overhaul because the wrong people are getting the money.

I agree that AHS is terrible after spending a few weeks in the hospital. Was on the floor of the bathroom pulled nurse call a few times, they don't come, after 1/2 hr got myself up. In bed freezing cause I can't tell my temperature they said I only get one blanket and one pillow due to cutbacks. People sat in beds with soiled bottoms that couldn't move for hours, they would hit nurse call and no one would respond. One nurse would eventually come in and it was rather painful to hear and see what goes on. I was so glad to be discharged. The sliding door fell off the track and broke, and the blood pressure devise was broken on my bed so they had to constantly drag the one over from the neighbors bed. When going through the 12 hr admittance and covid checks to second hospital the one nurse was useless, she spent time on the phone gabbing on a personal conversation, I asked for help as my throat was clogged and I couldn't breathe, she said in a bit and went back to her personal conversation bitching about her job. So I just let it go on the floor to get rid of my issue. She wasn't impressed, I said well if you would of came rather that your conversation bitching about your job we would of had this easily looked after. Thats another topic anyway, Just the entire system is screwed, staff are unhappy and lots wont give you service. In the US its totally different.
I hope this all gets fixed.

It’s bottle necked at the hospital due to not enough beds open and not enough Doctors.
Waiting rooms are full.
Ambulance’s wait for hours to offload a patient to transfer care to the hospital staff.
Some days 6 or 7 ambulances are lined up waiting to offload a patient

That’s where the majority of the ambulance issues are. Danielle Snith said at her town hall in Vulcan she has a really good friend that’s a paramedic and he told her they need an admitting team in every hospital to take delivery of patients so those ambulances can get back on station. There in theory is probably enough ambulances in the health care system if they could drop off and get back into the field asap. They just need people with common sense in the decision making depts of AHS

and that’s how the bureaucracy sees the answer to everything. Hire more people and another manager to manage the new people. There would be a manager at each hospital and a team of managers in the AHS offices to see that the program was running properly.
AHS and Dep’t of Education have lots of people, just not enough people working at the grass roots level. Too many in administration type jobs pushing all the required paper work.

My dad worked many years in the private sector and then spent the last 10 years of his career with health canada. He couldn't believe the wasted money being thrown around. Especially in Northern communities. And no accountability.

Exactly, use water meters as an example. Your town needs water meters to watch what is going into the sewer system so no one abuses it. Now we need water meter readers, so add them to the hire list. Well someone needs to make sure the water meter readers are doing there job so we need a manager of the water meter readers. Eventually the water consumption is lost in the bureautic nightmare. And so public works begins....gawd!

He didn’t say managers, he said admitting team… which is what I thought the triage system is supposed to do…??

All we need is for people to do their job…
Just like every other industry…

The problem is no accountability in the public system.

I’ve vented my beef here before, but I’ll share it again, as I feel it’s quite common in healthcare.

My ex-MIL worked at a rural hospital for over 50 yrs… (yes, deep into her 70’s). She quickly made enough seniority that she would only chose night shift for the majority of her career, as all the long term beds were asleep and the ER was quiet. She often slept while on duty. She made sure she fully utilized all her sick days, and often went on STD (for no good reason). She ensured that her local physio friend granted her a handicap parking pass so she could go to the city and receive prime parking at the mall (this went on for decades). She also sat on the negotiating teams for the union, and spent more time “fighting for the kids” (her bs words for the rest of her co-workers) than actually worrying about filling her shifts at work, yet she was always well paid and expensed a bunch of bullch!t for repetitious travel to union head quarters in Edmonton. She was an absolute gross abuser of the system, and yet had the audacity to tell me on many occasions about how she “deserved” even more. She wanted to get paid, but didn’t want to work. And then when she did work, it was always subpar. She would always bad mouth every other worker that held a higher position than she did. I told one time that if she was so smart, she should go complete a few courses and then she could be the doctor.

When Rachel Notley came along, I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was basically the same self serving arrogant bitch I’d been dealing with for years.

I’m not big on Smith’s ideas with sovereignty, but hope we can get some preferential treatment like Ont/Que.
I really hope she takes AHS and the healthcare system to task, the spending is unsustainable. No other industry would get away with this crap. The spending is spiralling out of control.

If it were only just your example of the "ex" , maybe mention & explain how DOD or designated days off work.

This abuse applies to all levels from & including the PM & down. Our local MP is one highest expensed member's, travels everywhere with his wife. I know this individual personally, he is a cheap prick unless it is someone else's money.

Same with one of our town council members, I know personally. Cheap as cheap gets with his own money, I see how he abuses his expense account.......brutal.

I read what he said. I said, with the establishment of an admitting team, AHS would need a manager for each of those teams and on and on the AHS grows exponentially.

Further to your story about the 70 year old nurse, I know a nurse that worked into her 70’s, has a 50 year certificate from AHS, worked night shift to get away from the administrative BS so she could be a nurse to the patients, and retired with 300+ sick days to her credit. There are good people in the system and my point was that AHS and I also included the Dept of Education were very top heavy with administrators/managers who screw the system to death.
