I loved the 2011 ecoboost I had, hearing the waste gate is a hoot. There are some decent programmers for the Eco now that will easily take it over 400hp and 470tq. Mileage wise the only ford motor that is hard on gas is the 6.2 (I have one now in an 12 f150 it's 1.5-2 l/100 worse). Towing with the Eco is amazing it really pulls, tough call between the 5.0 and Eco for daily driver.

I bought a 2011 Ecoboost FX4 crew cab w 6.5ft box and 72,000km on it - at about 78,000km the check engine light came on and it was having issues with power. I was out of town working with it, took it in as soon as I got back. I managed to get them to fix everything under warranty. The ford dealership was good to deal with, they covered my rental truck for about 10 days while they had it. Despite these issues, I do love this truck. I am at 88,000km now and haven't had any other issues.
Below is a list of the work they covered under warrenty. I put up the $375 for a general tune up and plug replacement. I'm not sure what happened, guessing the previous owner did a couple neutral drops or something before he traded it in... I traded in a 2011 Tacoma to Metro ford for my new Ecoboost. Needed some extra towing power and interior space.

I have a 2011 Ecoboost work truck that has been to the oil patch alot, haven't had any engine troubles per say, I did have issues with sensors from gas pedal to throttle body. I get 15-17 L per 100k. The turbo has been whistling more recently but dealer sys its' normal. Bigger issue happening over 75k from what have been reading.
We purchased a 2013 5.0 L FX4 last year. We do love it, love the sound, the performance is good, not as snappy as the Ecoboost. My wife primarily drives it and averages 15 L per 100k.

They both seem to tow my enclosed quad trailer in similar fashion.

What I meant was that no one seems to get anywhere close to Ford's claimed 9.0 L per 100k on this motor. Most people I have spoke to or know are around 14-15L per 100k. But then again, I can't imagine many drive these like senior citizens.

No doubt the Eco is a fast, snappy truck for sure and I have heard positive things about towing as well.

Would one be wise to stay away from a first year 2011 ecoboost and stick to 2012 and up or is there any diff? Still leaning 5.0 though....

I got a 2011 eco with 115000km, had the recall stuff done at 40000km for the miss and the intercooler its been good since.

I bought a 13 eco and traded off my diesel due to cheaper operating costs. I get 16/100km on lie-o-meter empty and 24/100 towing a 30 foot light fifth wheel. I'm still below my pin weight (just barely) but do notice during high winds that I don't have my diesel up front anymore. Other than that it pulls like a dream. No concerns on lack of power when towing. My only complaint is that it is a v6 and sounds like a rice rocket if people put an exhaust on it. The wife has the new GMC and interior wise I would say it's the same if not better than ford but lacks some of the HP the eco has. Tow ratings are very similar and hers gets way better millage empty than mine. I do want to add air bags to help level the truck back out a little image.jpg

Just curious , what is the weight of that trailer, as I noticed it says Lite on the side ?
Trucks are improving all the time , especially concerning the engine and transmission capabilities.

I know a few people with the Ecoboost and love it, but I also know a couple guys that don't like it because of the fuel mileage when they are towing a trailer. I have ridden in both and I prefer the sound of the 5L but the v6 definitely has more get up and go.. I personally would buy the Ecoboost.

I have owned the 5.0 L and it gave a steady 15L/100km whether i was driving 110 or 130 km/h.Equipped with 3.73 rear end ratio. Had alot of get up and go. Towed my 18ft aluminum fishing boat loaded down very well.
Have friends with eco-boost and have heard mixed reviews. One friend tows his 36' bumper hitch holiday trailer with an eco-boost and it does very well he states. He also has the 3.73 gear ratio.
Geared properly I think the eco would be ok. I'm just hesitant with turbo charged gas engines and I leave the big hauling for my diesel.
I currently have a Ford 1/2ton with the 6.2L (3.73 ratio)engine and it gets the same 15-16L/100km numbers but tows things with more ease.

When your towing a big load, you definitely miss those two cylinders when your going down steeper hills in tow mode and cruise control on, your engine won't hold you going down, it will keep gearing down to about 4th or 3rd and be around 4 grand on the ol tach while doing about 100km/ h. It pulls like there's no tomorrow though. I may have got one that was built on a Friday afternoon, had quite a few issues that I've mentioned on other threads in here. Fuel mileage isn't close to what they claim, but they are a blast to drive, I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger again once I know that the issues I have had aren't happening on the new ones. Mines a 2012 eco and i can't believe how its a stump puller. I just added air bags to level it out and have better ride. Mileage is very very disappointing empty !!! Over all have had little issues with it. Had the rear diff carrier replaced due to the electric diff lock failed this winter.

Depending on the trucks use. 3.15's or 3.55's in theory should get better mileage on the highway.

If a guy was buying a used Eco - what to look for, ask etc? What sort of recalls were done if any?

How much are you looking to spend? i know of an ecoboost for sale, 45g takes it.. 725km on it. fully loaded, graphite in colour with black wheels and red pin striping.

I just did a 1400 k round trip out to Saskatoon down to swift current and back traveling just under 120 when i could and not babying it at all and was showing 11.8L/100k when i got to Saskatoon with a slight tail wind and when i got home was 12.7L/100k with a bit of a headwind on the way back truck was empty with 2 people and luggage
I tow a 20 cargo with 3 m8 cats in the back and it pulls as fast as u want to go but mileage really goes down but u cant have both if u want power its gona cost you
over all its a great truck

We drove down to lake Havasu ( couple hours south of Vegas) on the kids spring break, on the way down, canopy on pushing a head wind 17.0-17.5... After a couple of tanks of u.s. Fuel, I was down to 16, last fuel up was in Mesquite, and I drove the rest of the week in Havasu on the same tank. Coming home, no head wind to speak of, 13-13.5l/ 100km. Get back into AB and it climbed steady up to 16.8 till I got home, and it's been between that and 17.5 since then. Maybe my truck likes the taste of Yankee gas better than the AB gas. Oh, I should mention, that the cruise was set at 120 from home all the way down there and back.
