Wideman hit on Henderson

Wideman should be suspended for the rest of the season to include the playoffs. There is no doubt in my mind that he meant to hit the linesman and that was a vicious crosscheck. There is no excuse for what he did, concussion or not.

First off I agree it was an intentional cross check whether he knew it was the ref or not. But have you guys ever had a concussion? It's not something you can just shake off in 30 seconds. My buddy got one(not from hockey) and it took a full day before he could think clearly again. I know he didn't get checked out by the docs but how many hockey players willingly leave the game unless they're bleeding everywhere? Just cause he didn't get checked out doesn't mean everything was fine.

so the NHL has spoken…… 20 games. I agree with the result but to bad the NHL doesn't apply the rule book to all players when they have overstepped their boundaries. Seems hit and miss.

I still think he deserved a lifetime ban...... you don't attack an official in any sport. I remember a while ago, someone attacked a basketball ref, and was banned for 2 years. Baseball can get permanent ban for attacking an official too(belly bumping and spitting and bad breath doesn't count)

I think it's murky. Definitely room for grey area on this one. I believe the Flames franchise is at fault in this situation - if indeed Wideman had been concussed on the play - which looks very possible, he should have had an instant trip to the quiet room.

That being said, it looks like an aggressive action, BUT he's also on an ice surface where you need to be defensive and act fast. So could it have been that he was woozy and acted on instinct vs maliciously, yes. The lack of remorse after the fact makes it look intentional.

Obviously, I can't decide which way I lean. You guys should see me pick a chocolate bar LOL

The $540,000.00 is salary loss from being suspended without pay. He has not been fined.

sorry, I meant assault/attack on an official ... several including Raffi Torres(suspended twice, one for 41 games, and I think the other was around 26 games) for hits on other players, etc

Funny you should mention baseball Ric...even though he was retired already Pete Rose gets a lifetime ban from doing anything in baseball for sports gambling and Wideman crosschecks an official from behind, which could have led him to be a quadriplegic or dead if his head had hit the boards, and all he gets is 20 games and a fine....Really!! Sorry peeps but concussion or not, and yes I've had one playing hockey, that is pathetic! Just sayin....

I will start of by stating that I am a Flames fan so I may have my homer glasses on haha. I completely agree with him getting suspended because whether he thought it was a player or ref it doesn't matter as it was uncalled for actions. I totally agree that he was concussed and foggy headed and not seeing clearly so his depth perception and awareness was impacted but it still doesn't completely excuse his actions. However, anyone who has played fast high impact sports know that when there is an unexpected collision coming your natural reaction is to put your hands up and push away to brace yourself without even thinking twice. With Wideman being disoriented he has a lack for sense of time and space and awareness causing a severe impact. He has never shown to be abusive in his history or a dirty player so I think that it was an accidental but on purpose incident. He didn't have the intent to cause injury or abuse but he did intend to protect himself with excessive force. No one can really know what he was thinking, seeing or feeling at the time of the hit so we are all drawing our own conclusions. I agree that he should be suspended, but 20 games is a little excessive I think due to what I stated above and also the youtube video below. Its not the exact same as the Wideman situtation but is similair and it involves the same official haha. Oh and Weber never got any discipline for hit hit.

I will also will state that I am not a fan of Wideman at all and wish he wasn't on the Flames. He makes a lot of boneheaded plays with the puck that make you scratch your head (not physical or abusive plays though) and he is insanely slow. I was hoping he would get traded but that probably wont happen now. But I am glad that he isn't playing right now because I think the flames are better off without him haha.
