Re: Vintage Oval Racing and Drags In Regina - Feb 18 & 19 2012

For anyone planning on going to the Earl Grey drags and/or ovals the Saskatchewan Vintage Snowmobile Association has set up a web-site for registering
See below:
WOT
*******************************************************************************************************************************
The SVSA (Saskatchewan Vintage Snowmobile Association) is going to be registering race sled numbers for all the Saskatchewan vintage drag races starting this winter. As such you can register the number on your sled for a minimal fee of $5 per sled for 2 racing seasons (2012 & 2013). Number will only be guaranteed up until 4 days prior to a race. We have a section of www.sasksnowmobile.com set aside for us to relay news and information in the Saskatchewan vintage scene so please keep an eye on it. It is free to join the site and takes only a few minutes. Please post on the website or send us an email to svsanumbers@gmail.com. We would like you to include your full name, the numbers you require, email address and phone number that we will keep on file so that this information can be used to contact you when numbers need to be re-registered. We will post a list on the website for public viewing that will have only race numbers and names. We will not publicize your email or phone number. Numbers will be given out at a first come first serve basis so please bare with us as we are sure to be flooded with many requests. A paypal account will be up and running shortly for those who prefer to use it, for those who don't a cheque for your total can be made out to the SVSA and mailed to

SVSA
6 Drope Street
Regina, Sk
S4R 4R6

Hopefully this number registration will relieve some of the stress on the club members during the registration process on race day. Best regards from the SVSA and have a great season of racing!

Found an SRX but probably won't have it ready for this year. Should be in all her glory next season though.
She'll be flying under the banner of the GBCA Racing Team.

I've been looking for sleds as I'd love to but cant find what I want?

Nope, picked up an 80 440 out of Calgary.
Already lined up a new racing heart for her, the chassis I'll work on this year then hood, paint, decals and awayyyyyy we go.

Awesome, congrats.

ahhhh the 1980 model is definately one the best looking SRX models IMO (with all that trick gold anodizing)

I went out and got one in fall 1979 when the ISR decided to change the SRX stock ranking and classified the '80 model as "A" stock as it was somewhat "detuned" that year to ~80hp (lower comp heads, tighter exhaust, butterfly carbs, etc) and got heavier. However after getting it all geared up to race, oil injection bypassed (and converted to premix which was legal) alas I could still beat it handily with my 76 340 Merc (which was also A-stock and battled it out with the 76 340 SRX for A-stock supremacy)
But it was a lot closer if I took off the airbox however (and jetted up for it) as the new design airbox seemed quite restrictive.

That being said, with the "modern" rules for super stock (which I presume you'd be looking at) you can run without an airbox, so perhaps the full potential of those BIG 40mm butterflys can now be realized. And with ANY "internal" engine modifications allowed in Super Stock you can go ahead and port/polish (I should have templates depending on your casting numbers) and bring the head volume down to 77 specs -18.5cc
OR
are you thinking about going the all-out the mod-stock route?

PS> I've uploaded the vintage rule book as used in Beausejour. Hope to see you there THIS year!! ;)

No not Yvon Gagne pipes. These were designed by Steve Decker specifically for our 250 (which Steve also built) and welded up by a pipe construction specialist in Wisconsin. That's a LOT of welding!!

I seen that too
Hey Greg.
Are you considering this sled?
I had that guy with the 79 near Edm sent me some larger pics including underneath. (I'll email them to you if you wish)
The belly pan is pretty beat up (a few "can openers") and it will need a track, but not such a big deal for a race sled and still not a bad price @$1400 imo.
The 78-79 SRX is currently quite competitive in the 440 LC Super Stock class (see post above)
He also has a spare 79 8J0 engine for another $500 but it looks like it's been stored wide open to the elements (why do people do that?) and only in good "core" condition...

PS> I don't know if you seen this on FB but here is our NB Racing 250X Scorpion being piloted "in-style" by our driver Nick Butze
We had a few clutching issues at Eagle River, but hope to reach the podium over the next month (as well as the Canadian Championship trophy at Beausejour in March!)

dangorous to run without air box, we did that once at Wetaskiwan in 76, belt shredded and pistons ate it, wrapped around crank, rods? but fortunately didnt wreck much more than the pistons.

The sled you are talking about is not an actual 81. It is a brand-new "re-pop" Al Enno chassis (aka SnoPro Unlimited) complete with all the Wahl Bros goodness
It is actually the black #88 sled in the above photos (in this thread) which is currently and only temporarily residing in SH while we change the powertrain from a 250cc to 440cc in our attempt to secure the Jerry Bunke Memorial Trophy at the Canadian Championships in Beausejour MB this coming March.
It has NOT been sitting for 20 years in fact it raced at Eagle River 1 year ago and came back to AB after BJ last March.
It is not for sale at this time
But I did send you a PM about another sled you might be interested in. (an versi-visa)

Everything "race" has risks involved of course but many mod sleds run without an airbox. Some even without pod filters.
Modern race chassis construction now completely isolates the belt drive housing from the engine bay and carbs due to enclosed belt guard rules

BTW: we were at North-Am in 76.(and many years before and after that)
What sleds and classes were you running? What was your NWSA sled #
We are compiling a list of NWSA members for a possible reunion next Fall
See our NWSA FB page here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/5995052729/
