Hey guys, Im half way through a gear change from a 21 to a 22 top gear. I was told the same stock chain would work but shes a little tight. Is there another size chain or am I stuck with this stock gearing. Stock ratio is 2.33 with a 21 and the 22 will give me 2.23.(bottom is 49) Still have 10 tooth drivers as well. Looking for some input please!

Can I use the stock chain with the 20 top gear or is the chain then too long causing too much deflection off the adjuster.

YOU SHOULD BE DROPPING FROM THE 21 TO A 20 TOOTH 15WIDE GEAR AND 15W CHAIN........... WHAT YOU CURRENTLY HAVE IS THE STOCK GEARS FOR A 162 1000 SUMMIT............ WHAT YEAR IS YOUR 1000 AND IS IT A SUMMIT OR A LAKE RACER(MACH)??? I THINK YOU'VE GONE THE WRONG WAY?? IF YOU WERE GOING FOR TOP END SPEED, YOU WOULD BE RAISING YOUR TOOTH TO A 22 OR 23 TOOTH GEAR, BUT NOT SURE WHAT YOU'RE GOIN' FOR HERE??? THE 1000 SUMMIT HAS ENOUGH POWER THAT THE TRICK IS TO DROP THE UPPER GEAR 1 TOOTH(SOME GUYS ARE EVEN GOIN' 2 TEETH), WHICH RAISES YOUR GEAR RATIO(THE HIGHER THE # THE BETTER, TO A POINT)
49/21 = 2.34
49/20 = 2.45(BETTER FOR ACCELERATION AND RESPONSIVENESS)
49/22 = 2.23(BETTER TOP-END SPEED, BUT WEAKER ACCELERATION)
DEFINATELY GO WITH THE 15WIDE CHAIN TOO, AS THIS IS A WEAK SPOT FOR 1000 SUMMITS(IF THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE)....CHAINS BREAK AND DAMAGE THE CHAIN CASES........$$$$$$$. LET US KNOW

Finally someone who can explain this! Its obvious that I was confused between the top gear and the bottom gear purposes. I will shelf the 22 and order a 20. I am running an 05 RT 1000 with 10 tooth drivers. If I go to a 15 wide chain then do I also need to change the bottom gear as well....... and where can I purchase these parts. I spoke with a dealer not far from here and he did not understand the 15 wide thing. I will do some calling around tomorrow and try to find this stuff.

Thanks for your feedback Summitric,

Denis

P.S. I also have some clutch stuff coming from Absolute so hopefully this thing rips when Im done!!!!

You don't have to change the bottom gear to a 15 wide just the top gear and chain. The bottom is more than strong enough as 13 wide to stay , it will save your self some money on buying a lower gear.:D

I you have a wide chain and top gear and a narrower bottom gear doesn't that mean thatthe bottom gear is only using part of the chain? Wouldn't that put stresses on it that it's not really designed to absorb.....the chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.....or am I out to lunch????......again.......

You can just change your top gear and chain to 15 wide. This is a common set-up suggestion I copied from another site. I am running a 19 tooth, 15 wide top gear, with a 15 wide, 84 pitch chain in mine. I just bought it this summer; so I don't have any opinion yet on it.

So the setup is:
Stock chain length with 86 pitch 15 wide(I think its just called 86T15w..but I could be wrong)
20 tooth top gear
440 shim (thinner than stock) P/N 504093400

This is good stuff guys. So if I am getting this right I need to order a 15 wide 20 tooth top gear with a thinner 440 shim behind the top gear as well as a 15 wide 84 pitch chain. Let me know if I am missing something!

I'm not sure if you'll need an 84 or just a 15 wide stock length chain (86 I believe). The guy that owned mine wanted to go to a 19 instead of a 20; that's why he used a shorter chain. I think if you go 20-49 you can still use the stock chain. Anyone using a 20....Summitric...Nutz?

Just for your information Gerry @ Martin Equipment sourced everything out and ordered it for $185.00. 20 tooth 15 wide top gear, 15 wide 86 chain and the 440 spacer for behind the top gear. All done but the assembly part.

P.S. SNOW PLEASE SOON!

I'm at 19/49 (2.58) with an 84 pitch chain. Does the 51 bottom gear keep you at the 86 pitch stock length? If he has an 84 you could go with the 2.58 ratio.:twocents: You need to get that stuff...sled moddin' beers.:D:D

good question, does anyone know whether a 19/51 would require a different chain other than the stock 86?...or the 84?
