Looked at a flat deck for the dooley yesterday, all aluminum, 9' long, around 7500. The question is sled deck or flat deck? The flat is lower, has build in boxes under the deck, but I would have to do something for an aux. fuel tank. Anyone done this?

I like the idea of a flat deck. It would be nicer then a sled deck when loading. And would work good with a 5th wheel hitch. As for a fuel tank you could look into those over size ones that go into to stock location. But if you need a tank for sled fuel then you could get a custom one made for on your deck.

this is a hypothetical debate I have all the time.

In the future I'd like to purchase just a cab n chassis and custom build myself a flat deck onto it, but then I lose all the storage area under the sled deck in the box.... where do I carry jerry cans, tools, etc.......

be another interesting thread to follow!

This has 4 tool boxes on the sides under the deck, I will need to see if the cans will fit. Just need to fiure out the slip tank thing. cost is only 1000ish more than a good deck without being 5' in the air. I'll shoot pics when I am there next

I've had decks on 2 of my trucks. I have a sled deck in the box of my current truck. When the box rusts out it'll be getting another deck. Scares the crap out of me some days loading on this thing. Was always a breeze loading on my last 2 deck trucks. If I was you there wouldn't really be much of a decision....I'd deck it.

Build the headache rack full height, then go out over the cab with a storage deck.

My thoughts exactly, roof rack or a removable headache rack for gas and gear. I think I may sway this way for the summer as well just for a single axle truck, using folding or attachable sides. That dodge above is a really nice setup with the folding ramp in the back. A deck setup would be good for quads as well.

I think the guy said it was 8' wide. I have always shied away from that on a SRW truck, but it didn't look goofy to me at all.

that brings up another debate, SRW vs DRW.... which is better for this purpose & why?

Mine would also be used in the summer for the quads and pulling the holiday trailer.

Then we could get into Gas VS Diesel......

For guys that have daily drivers and a toy hauler to save some cash just u bolt some planks on the frame and a two place sled trailer. Basically all a box truck is with out the sides.

I'm currently pulling a 4 place with full load of tools, spare parts etc. in the trailer (not to mention all the Beer we have to pack for the long trips). When this truck is ready for replacement, I'll be going to a dually with 2 place enclosed trailer. Since it seems we're getting further & further off the beaten path to get away from other people, getting the 4 place turned around on some of the logging roads gets a bit dicey especially this time of year. Also don't need all the extra crap I haul around for the 2 day trips, or when it's just 2 of us going.

Can find basic flat-decks really cheap & modify to suit your needs. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I've never had a problem ripping something brand new apart to modify for my needs. Also pretty easy to have any size tank built to suit your needs.

Wait for Ferniesnow to post up...he has a real nice setup where the box sides can fold down to create a full width deck or be kept pinned up to create a small box or room for a single machine. Looks super easy to load.

Personally I would raise the flat bed 3" off the frame and store the ramp under the deck between the rails, not that much of an increase in height to have a full ramp (those foldable ones are a PITA IMO). A couple of stacked "shelves/boxes" on the headache rack (behind the seats) that are right between the skis to hold jerries (or a custom tank if you can afford it), a couple underbody boxes in front of the rear wheels for gear and you are good to go.

There is less material in a flat deck than on a standard sled deck so I don't know what would cost $7500 unless that's the price for the truck as well. A sled deck is around $2500-$3500.
