Are you only supposed to run the Polaris oil in the 900's or could I run a different type of synthetic, say Shell Advance Synthetic oil?

I've been running Shell Advance for 4 years. No problems for me.
Does Polaris refine their own oil? Do they pay for better oil from suppliers? I can't see companies like Shell providing better oil to manufacturers than what they would put on the market themselves.
If anyone knows better, let me know.

I ran Shell Advance Syn. for four seasons on my '01 800 RMK, and six seasons on my '06 900 RMK for over 8,000 miles combined with no engine issues. Now running it on my '12 Pro RMK.
