I've been a long term 10+ year customer at the Peaks Lodge. I cancelled our reservation 2 days in advance that was made on Booking.com and there was a message to contact the hotel directly. I called the Peaks and spoke with the owner and he said he wouldn't charge me if they could rent the room out, I thought fair enough.
I checked Booking.com today and it showed the Peaks fully booked and our credit card was charged. I called the hotel and the owner was a complete a-hole to me and said it was my fault that I cancelled and told me to enjoy staying at the Frontier?? I then talked to Booking.com and they spoke to him directly and he said he wasn't going to refund us regardless.
I get it that I cancelled my rez but don't lie to me and say you are not going to charge me and then proceed to do so. Good stand up guy!! I hope his short term business model serves him well. I don't think me or my group will be staying there any longer. Good luck with the business Easterner! Your cut throat attitude won't survive out West.
