Next they are wanting to capture pregnant caribou cows in early Apr. and pen them for birthing, keep them until June and then release them back into the wild again. Revelstoke will be the pilot area for this. There was a lot of concern about the cows aborting.
We actually heard the scientist tell us that he doesn`t believe snowmobiling and heli-skiing have an impact on caribou numbers. Numbers were decreasing long before the these sports became very popular in this area. He also stated there has been enough studying and that it was time to do something beacause we don`t need the feds stepping in. Oh and there is very little money left for the programs it was all spent on studies.
The biggest problem in caribou mortality is the grizzlies and wolverines eating the young within the 1st month of their lives. A grizzly kill also wouldn`t work, the grizzlies that kill caribou have been taught and it could only be 1 or 2.
The scientist also told us that in all 3 types of caribou, numbers are decreasing and not just here, right across Canada.
The reporter from the paper was there, hope those comments make it into the article.
