I've got a foldable and then a wire saw. Both work great! Got then from wholesale sports

Folding swede saw is nice if you needed to cut bigger logs for firewood.

Why a saw? We keep a sharp axe on all of our sleds ... works for ice and wood + you have extra reach for buried limbs or overhangs ..... any reason for saw preference?

I have a folding saw that I got from mec that works great. I've seen machetes with a saw on the bottom half of the blade that look like they would work good. Probably need a tunnel mount though for those since I don't think it would fit under the hood.

I bought a chain saw chain and cut it about 30" long, then welded handles on the end. I can cut through a 4" tree in less then 30secs. And it folds up and fits into a pencil case that I kept in the glove box of my xm

Axe is very unefficient, saw is waaay faster weighs less.
I got a bca snow saw and it cuts trees like crazy. Highly recommended.

Disagree with you. You just need to try a SHARP axe. Might weigh a bit more but is much more practical.

I have the Stihl PS 60. Awesome saw. I had the Gombi folding saw from Lee Valley, but not sturdy enough and already broke a blade. You can get replacement blades from Lee Valley for their saws. Here is a pic of the Stihl saw:

Best is to have both. Saw is way faster for cutting through a 6 inch log.
I prefer a good axe as well but tough to beat a good saw .

The key to an axe is that it has to be sharp - same too for a saw. Have one of the folding saws like above but find the axe to be more useful. Nice to have both.

I used to carry both but found I only used the axe to break the frozen snow balls in an avalanche debris pile. The key here is that the saw has to be good quality. If I had $10 for every time I saw a saw blade from the shovel handle break, I would be a rich man. That is not a good quality saw for sawing trees/branches (it was intended to saw snow blocks for compression tests). I can't imagine the PA saw being much better but I have never used one. You get what you pay for, IMHO

The Stihl, is the best out there and will last and be sharp for quite some time. If you ride 50+ days a year and ride trees, you deserve to have a quality saw.

I pack both a Stihl saw and a hatchet. And have used both. As Tex mentioned, the hatchet comes in handy for beating stuff.
