Was hoping to make a trip out to golden for the 28th and 1st of march. Was wondering if anyone has an idea about the current conditions and where would be the best spot for some good, deep snow...

thanks for the details. what about riding areas? it will be our first time to golden. We are intermediate riders - been sledding for 5 years - looking for some deep snow, not as much into hillclimbing.

Silent Pass or Quarz Creek would be your best bet if you're intermediate mountain riders and don't know the areas.
Gorman isn't worth it so far this year unless it gets a ton of snow. Just good to pass through right now and get to some other areas (Lang, Holt, East Quartz...) but unless you have someone with you to guide you through it shouldn't be your first choice.
Silver Mines are also better with someone to take you in, it hasn't been good riding in there from the reports around here, and again if there isn't a ton more snow by then, don't bother. Same as some of the other non-maintained areas.
Silent Pass and Quartz give you lots of variety and you can generally find powder, or at least untracked, if you look for it. Bit hard to find right now though! Hillclimbing is there is you want it, but lots of trees, creeks, open space... etc too. Groomed trails to these areas as well.
However, unless it snows you will have a VERY difficult time finding powder or untracked anywhere! We live here and even the unknown areas you can generally count on finding snow is getting tracked up! People are desperate for snow and going anywhere they can to find it!
There is snow in the forecast for this coming week...but we'll see if that amounts to anything. At least there may be a little fluff to soften it up out there.
How many in your group? We'll be riding on Friday at Silent as well as somewhere on the weekend-can show you around a little if you need it.
I'll give you a snow report later next week...

Thats awsome thanks for the info. The will be either 2 or 4 of us coming out there. I guess it will depend on what happens with the snowfall this week. If we do end up coming out it would be great to meet up...Keep us posted on the conditions as the week rolls on. Thanks again

Scaring first-timers??? Sending newer riders to lesser known or poorer condition areas isn't a great idea IMO. A couple Golden first-timers to Gorman, through Lang to E.Quartz with the conditions this year is questionable. Throw in the usual bad vis up there, and ???
Most people aren't happy to go to Gorman right now to ride rocks - as nice as the scenery is up there - not when there's better options anyways.

It seems if people come out for a weekend of sledding they want to get the most out of it! '8284' was looking for info on areas and conditions...and powder. I think it's better to know what you're in for than making a big trip expecting something else. It's better to go to areas that suit your riding style and ability as well.

I agree - get out and make the best of it! But if you're planning a trip and get the odd day in the mountains a year, you'll want the best, most suitable riding you can get! If someone wants to know what the areas/conditions are like and we're riding them a couple times a week, why not let them know what we've experienced. Isn't meant to scare them, doesn't mean they have to go by it and that they shouldn't come out and ride. People ask these questions for a reason, not just to be told generally where areas are and to get out and ride but to gather details to help them make thier decisions. Not everyone is comfortable in unknown areas, especially if they don't ride in the mountains alot and input from other riders helps them decide for themselves what their best option is.

Should be irrelevent soon - looks like alot of snow next week through the weekend!
Start packing 'sledder8284' !!!

Hey, snowed a bit in the valley the last couple days. Word is that Golden is getting hit harder than us, so that' good!
Should be some good snow at Quartz as the snow is hitting harder to the north and west. Silent is getting some good snow too. Seems like the hardest hit areas are going to be Revy and Fernie area, but Kicking Horse ski hill at Golden is reporting 17cms over the past couple days and more coming today-tomorrow. Locals are hoping for 25-30 up top.
Sledder 8284 -I would definitely keep your trip planned for this weekend, best snow we've seen for a couple months. If you plan a trip to Quartz one day and Silent Pass the next, you should get some good riding in. Snow is forecast lightly on the weekend so vis may be low, but those areas are good to get around in and have lots to offer at lower levels so no need to ride the alpine if vis is bad.

We're riding Friday (most likely Silent Pass) but could be Quartz Friday and Silent on Saturday. If anyone wants to tag on with us, might only be two of us on Friday. May escort some friends to Silent on Saturday so that may decide where/when we ride which area.

Sledder 8284 if you want to ride Silent you can tag on with our group on Saturday. I'll let you know our plans once they firm up.
What are you riding? How many are coming? We gonna be digging alot? LOL.

any word on Silent Pass conditions? Elevation should be high enough at McMurdo bridge to Silent Pass to avoid major spring melting.

It is snowing like crazy in Calgary right now and reports of rain in Golden with a 1200 - 1400 meter snow line ()

Parked at 21 last wknd. Suggest driving further by this weekend unless you've got a big enclosed. Trail was deteriorating FAST-big difference every day. Better once you got further up the trail, fine from McMurdo up. No groooming since before Easter. Snow up top was decent spring snow-crusty early, but softer later in the day. Avy site weather says freezing level around 3000m today but lowering to 2500 by tomorrow.? Definitely some precip up there now and it's cooling off towards the weekend.
FYI-Silent Lake is at 2040m.
