Tossing around the idea... Does anyone have any information on brokers, or any other valuable experience? Looking at new(er) Duramaxes and just debating which route to take. Thanks!

Where are you finding that much of a gap in prices? I have been watching and just can't see it , although I am after a superduty.

How much cheaper is that then local? I've been looking at used and there is no deals, infact some prices are even higher......Maybe dealers there offer up a better deal right off the bat to make it seem better? I would do it in a second if the savings is big enough.

The private used market is a joke there considering the state of their economy... It's not like the housing market there. However, I think there are some savings to be had in the dealer market (i.e. brand new, or year-old low km)... depending on brokerage fees and all the other nonsense involved. Like I said, I'm just tossing around the idea, looking for some feedback.

Ya I don't get it, $30k there will buy you about the same as here. But a new truck there is like $45k compared to $50k here. Makes no sense how they can get that much more for used compared to new.

But looking at new dodges even on montana dealers sites, definatly cheaper. As far as cost i've never imported a vehicle but IIRC just gst, and $200 inspection fee. A broker would make it a lot easier. I've just brought across parts and the canadian border can be a MAJOR PIA to deal with. Canadian tire does the inspection, and I will almost bet on a brand new truck, the inspection will be all of 5 seconds.....All that needs to be done I believe is daytime running lights turned on.

We bought our truck in the states Dec 2010. We saved a lot of money doing it that way, but the prices seem to have evened out a bit since then. A few things to know about buying down there: once you have the paperwork finalized and you have the bill of sale, you need to fax it to the border crossing where you will be going across. They need to have it for 3 days before they will let you cross (to make sure there is no liens on the vehicle). Make sure you choose a crossing that will be open when you want to cross and I'd call ahead to make sure they will do it for you. You also need to call the manufacturer and RIV and find out if there are any re-calls on your vehicle as they will not let you cross if there is any.
We actually found the truck on ebay but didnt buy it through there. We lucked out with the small dealership that we dealt with and they were very accommodating. Many of the dealers we talked to had experience with Canadian buyers.

My cousin just ordered a brand new 2012 F350 Lariat from Watkin Motors in Vernon. Has most of the bells and whistles you would expect for a Lariat. It will arrive in March. They tried to negotiate with several dealerships but Watkin's gave them the best deal at $65,000 plus all the relevant taxes. As for buying from the US, I have bought several things, including my '06 F350, boat, motorhome, Jeep, 32 ft trailer to name a few.
Process is relatively easy and no need for a broker! Simply send the bill of sale and title by fax to the border crossing you expect to cross atleast 3 days in advance. Call shortly after to make sure they got it. Once the 3 days has elapsed, go to the border and head into the US side of customs and show them the original sale/title. They will then give you a form to which you can proceed to the Canadian side with vehicle in hand. They will ask you to come in. You will need to fill out a Vehicle Import Form - Form 1 with all the details of your purchase. DO NOT SHOW A LESSER VALUE THAN PURCHASED TO SAVE ON THE GST - THEY WILL CATCH YOU! You will also pay the GST at the border. Then your off home. Make sure you get a temp insurance. You will then need to submit a copy of the Form 1 along with a letter from the manufacturer that there are no recalls on this unit to RIV Canada (check their web site for lots of useful info). You will also require to pay a fee of $195 plus GST which covers the inspection cost. They will in turn send you another letter which you will take to Canadian Tire for the Federal Inspection. After the inspection you are good to go for registering and insuring. Make sure your vehicle has day time running lights before going to Canadian Tire.

By the way, FORD covered warranty work for my '06 no questions asked.

Good luck!

I never understand the "save the gst trick" is that small portion of the gst really worth it. A guy at work did that. I told him before he left dont do it not worth it....but 8 hours at the bourder and all his contents of his new motor home spralled across the pavement plus a fine! He figured it out!

I hear you. I said it because a friend of mine did exactly the same thing and they made his life measurable for several hours plus a fine. His wife was not too impressed either with him. :nono:

One time I was buying like 15 different truck parts, etc and I didn't have a invoice for one so I just "forgot it" thankfully they didn't check to close. It's not worth getting out of the little bit of gst, but not having a bill to prove value is a SOB so I figured "forgetting" was better. But really, i've had all my paperwork in line, EVERYTHING and been hassled sometimes. Sometimes they are good sometimes they just feel like being douchbags. One time they just asked how much value, didn't even look at receipts or go outside and look at stuff, that was it. I wouldn't let them walk all over you if they are being a douche though, unless your trying to hide something. One time I was dealing with a lady PSMing, had to go outside and come back in dealt with someone else and made a comment about how she was being such a bitch. She didn't like it, but the guy didn't give a ch!t he was really good.Hell a few times, I had them making smarta$$ remarks about my lifted truck like "it shouldn't be allowed on the road" etc etc. Most of the time I don't say anything but sometimes I don't care if they want to try and hold me up for a few hours, I got nothing to hide. But the longest i've been there is about 30 mins and that was mostly for a line......

When we brought the wifes mini van up, it was easy. Paperwork at border # days in advance, make sure there is no recalls, already had insurance told them what was happening and provided SIN number took plate off her old vehicle. Drove to the States met the trucker 2 miles from the border, unloaded and drove to the US side which took all of 5minutes. Drove over to the Canada side had a bit of hassle with the amount I paid ( got a smoking deal and didn't try to cheat the GST). Paid the GST and the RIV fee. Drove home put on the daytime running lights and let it sit in the garage to thaw the summer washer fluid out. Took to Canadian tire, did the inspection went to register but couldn't because it needed an out of province inspection. Back to CT paid the fee he had the vehicle for 5 more minutes. Back over to registries and called insurance to let them know we will now be using the vehicle full time. All in all it is an easy process, that was a slightly used vehicle, don't cheap out and try and save some GST. Not worth the headache. Don't need a broker they will just screw you for something that you can do yourself. My total time was maybe an hour at the border. Also rememeber that the speedometer has to have KMH on it or you will need to change it. The wifes has MPH for the big number and KMH for the small number so I always get sh!t for sppeeding.

because when ford, dodge, gm finds out that the truck was exported from the us, all of the incentives that were on that truck from the company they have to pay that back.

Why do you have to go to the US Customs before going to the Canada Custom?
If I was to get sister in-law to buy a new truck then I buy it from her does that make it a used and hassle free truck to bring across the border?
