There is no way the bottom of the case was repaired. This was a NEW short block from BRP. The case has been rubbing against the motor mount plate by the looks of it. I have sent an email to Mr R's to prove i purchased this motor from them. The previous motor went down at Quartz on December 21st or 22nd, 2009 when we did our Avy course with Hangfire. The shortblock was bought the week after. For those who know me, know I have a business reputation that i could not jepardize by lieing to Mike about this sled and its history. I have many witnesses that are well respected in the sled business that will back me on what I am saying because they ride with my son and I and remember the motor going down and the new one going in.

Chris
so you are saying the pics only show a rub mark on the bottom of the case? maybe take a closer look, that case is cracked either side of the "rub" mark.....

Thats what happens when a piece of piston goes down between the connecting rod and the case. Are you saying the crack looks like it been repaired?

that's what the poster says, the spot you see on the bottom is someone's attempt to patch a hole in the case.

edit: it's either that or he's running some serious game here....

dont see how it could rub. there are no washers or spacers that could be misplaced.

i supose there could be a foriegn object flying around in there causing it to rub in that area.

The $2200 dollar question is it a rub mark or bubblegum smeared on the case?

there's a rub mark on the other side, the spot in question is most definitely some sort of repair or cover up. but was it done before the sled was sold? or was it done after? just asking what everyone's thinking.

If it's a New factory short block it should have a plate or be stamped to indicate that it's not the original engine.

I think that the owner would be foolish to make up this story and take it to this level as there are potential liebel and slander considerations.

Judge Judy will be right back.

On a side note, if your going to keep the sled you might as well put a new short block in. that way you know it's going to last at least 4-5000 km or whatever the accepted distance is.

On another note, 'one season' on the engine is being a bit vague. That could mean one season sitting all year or one season putting on 4000k. Just saying.

Btw my brand new shortblock has one season and looks a hell of a lot cleaner than that.

This is my take on the subject, not sayin it's what really happened but it kinda seems this way to me... Mr. Teth Air didn't lie about putting a new shortblock in the sled and probably has the paperwork to back it. But he just forgot to mention how it blew up since then and he patched it up enough to sell it without even replacing the cheap carb boot.. Maybe it would of ran forever if it didn't lean out because of the boot even with the JB weld patch.. So this come back to bite him in the a$$ and shows what kind of a guy he is.. So maybe he should help this guy (Barnes) out a bit with repairs to show us what kind of a fellow sledder and a swell guy he may be..

What a classic game of "pass the buck"! Oh, ,so Ken at Mr.R's ? And what is it Teth-Air? Something rubbing under the motor or a chunk of piston inside? C'mon... and I also will be making alternate tether plans on my sleds.

WOO! you guys are all wet! I have seen dozens of series 3 short blocks and I have seen several from SD that have been repaired below the con rod. They will not repair a case that is cracked like this one however if there is a small damaged area they WILL weld it. Truth be known they do not do these rebuilds "in house". There have been way more of these engines go down for big end bearing failure than crank bearings. If for any reason these engines experience detonation, that to small under lubricated bearing will gernade in a heartbeat, and the result is what you see in the pics. I will bet that this motor leaned out enough to cause deto and con bearing went before piston. Now weather there is more to the story on this engine we will never know?? as far as the black chit on the cylinder it means nothing other than a gasket leak. Remember the short block is exactly that, and has to be assembled by somebody else. These engines have the cheapest(made in Mexico)mikuni carbs money can buy, and are typically very lean in the mid range, add any other deto combo to the mix and bye bye con rod. They did not liquid cool the case for any other reason but to help eliminate this problem. There is a reason that we call them time bombs, this bomb went off:eek:

Clean your glasses for F@@K sake. If BRP or their paid associates did the repair, they'd magnflux the case before and after welding and you wouldn't see hair lines obviously from the first break in the case and they wouldn't patch it with JB weld. (haha sorry but thats exactly what the repair looks like!) Come on they aren't going to charge you for a new "rebuild" and send you something looking like that! You(or we as you say) may call them time bombs, I call them Ski-doo's.......... and I think, therefore I....... ride a 'Cat.

Sorry for your luck Barnes, hope it all works out, keep the faith brother!

Okay! now there's some words of wisdom, magnaflux aluminium eh!! I have read this tread and did not find good confirmation of JB weld and the crack I beleive is from the current problem not a past catastrophy?? maybe the owner could expand on this??

seems to be the general opinion, when did this repair take place. no one would by a new shortblock like that. would they? the engine failure, is secondary to the repair on the motor bottom, who did it and when. motor looks like more than 250 km ride, and if it was, wasn't looked after. more info is needed.
