In terms of size of the bike they are pretty close...

How old? how tall?

Best thing you can do is hit a show room and get him to sit on a bunch, buying a bike that's too small or that will only last them a season isn't that great... Each brand has something great to offer; try and get them using a clutch as soon as possible it will make life easier in the long run. I always thought the little KTM 65 was a sweet bike and wished my dad bought me one of those instead of a PW 80. Going up to a YZ 80 from the PW was quiet a jump... Kawasaki also has a smaller race inspired bike.

All depends how serious you want them to get and how quick, the Yamaha TTR series is very beginner friendly and they have many many different sizes with the first few sizes having a semi-automatic transmission. Same goes for the Honda.

Good luck!

How old is ur boy? A pw 80 and crf 70 are just bigger versions of the lil 50's with sh!t suspension and tame power. Get him a kx65(2000-10) or rm 65(03-06) these are the same bikes. They are cheaper than the ktm and more reliable. If the power is to nasty pick up a flywheel weight and then u will be golden.
