when my 2014 xm is cold my pull start won't engage till the rope is about 3 feet out. when warm engages right away.
What causes this? Sled out of warranty would like to fix myself. Thanks
They come with too much grease in the pawl mechanism. The grease gets old and sticks. Can also cause the pawl not to disengage completely and it gets chewed up.
Realatively easy fix. You can hold the cord extended with a small pair of vise grips or a slip knot. Probably a good idea to cut cord by the handle and tie a fresh knot as they tend to fray there.
After its off the sled, remove the spring clip with a small screwdriver carefully and clean all the old grease off the parts.
Don't remove the big disc that the rope winds around or accidentally drop the recoil with the clip removed. There is a substantial amount of spring tension that can dangerously explode.
I use a small amount of fluid film when re assembling. Don't lube the o-ring.
