So I would like to start out by saying I have nothing against teachers. They have a curriculum to teach and follow and they do what they gotta do to collect a paycheque. I have 3 kids that are 6,8, and 10. There getting to an age we’re a baseline for learning is set and a moral foundation takes place. Both my wife and I graduated and I went on to get trade tickets which involved some collage. I also know many people that are successful without a grade 12 and post secondary education. But looking at the school system now it upsets me at what are kids are being fed. Will a grade 12 mean anything in 10 or 15 years? Does it mean anything now? You know what I remember about school? I remember gym class, carpentry class, automotive and field trips. A little bit of biology only because my teacher was an absolute smoke show. Is school becoming a daycare? I dont feel bad when I take my children out of school for a trip.

I’m lucky to have my kids in a great school, we’ve never had troubles with a teachers, the classes don’t have special needs students, I don’t think there’s a single “teachers aid” in our school. That might be an advantage of having kids in a Catholic French Immersion school

Yes. But they don’t talk about socialism in school the way it’s supposed to talked about.

When your grade two’er comes home and tells you how she learned about transgender and anal sex theres a problem. I could see grade 5-6 maybe, we had sex ed in grade 8(1989).

Our older son needs a bit more attention to get the lesson sometimes so they labelled him ADHD and sent him for tests then wanted to give him drugs. Nope

School sure has changed since I was a kid where we learned basic subjects and the social aspect wasnt the priority.

We yanked all 3 and homeschool now which gives us more freedom than ever. They follow a basic curriculum and a facilitator comes to the house and tests the kids periodically. They are not sheltered and are very social and make friends easily wherever we go. Surprising how many families in the area are dooing the same thing, so there is no shortage of support and they have many hands on field trips about real life stuff. It’s definitely not for everybody, but it works for us and my lack of a work schedule.

Good thread here

Never mind the things that are taught, it's the lessons that aren't taught that bothers me. When I walked out of high school 9 years ago I good have quoted you Shakespeare, named the Tsars of Russia or named off just about any hydrocarbon by looking at the chemical formula.

But do you think I knew how to apply for a job? What interest, predatory loans, negative equity, or debt ratios were? How taxes were calculated on income or when or even how to file your taxes? The school system is seriously lacking in aspects that prepare students for real life.

My youngest boy has adhd or whatever they chose to label him with. My kids were in the public system but getting no help. Kept getting dr referrals which eventually led to medication. This lasted for 6 days and I kyboshed that. After a few parent teacher interviews and not getting anywhere we pulled the kids and put them in the Christian school. Nothing to do with religion and yes we have to pay for them to go there, but the kids have excelled. My youngest boy gets help daily and my wife has great communication with the there teachers now. They still get the same public curriculum tho. Cutting to the point here. We took a week and went to bc. There teachers were made aware and we left. The day before we came back the school is calling wondering were the kids are. The first day back my wife is in damage control.

I couldn’t handle it. On Friday I picked the kids up. I asked the first teacher what my son missed. He hasn’t had any homework the last two days. So it couldn’t have been that important. She looked right at me and asked me what he learned on his trip. I went off.

He learned that if you get something out of the cooler, close the lid or the ice is gonna melt.

He learned how to untangle a rats nest on a fishing reel cause he hit the free spool lever. Now that’s patience.

Reading a gps, tying knots, checking oil and coolant levels.

She was receptive but a lot of it went over her head. Last time I checked, the pathagorean theory didn’t change the tire on my bike. I had to bite my tongue because I didn’t want her to target my child for the rest of the school year.

I’ll say it again, the catholic school system is pretty good, they don’t preach all the pc B.S. as much as the public system, and our school has the highest grades in town.

Are there still things they teach that I disagree with, you bet! But that’s where parenting comes in.

I have a niece and nephew in grades 4 and 6 and I cannot believe how late they are with math now, they aren't behind in their class but compared to what I learned at their age it's easily 2 years later now. I don't get it, for years it was the opposite, now they are changing math to dumb it down and that is why you have kids who can't even figure out change without a computer telling them.

I remember getting my first chequebook. Thinking to myself. How the hell did I not learn how to write a cheque in school. I was 19.

It’s not even close. iPads for everything now. If you get the answer wrong you get 9 more chances to get it right.

I would agree, that's the system I attended. We still had a few left wing nut jobs for teachers, and of course some students that followed their words like blind sheep.

Thankfully I had parents at home that took the time to sort out fact from fiction that was taught at school.

Yea that pisses me off too. You have to know how to actually write. And you can't do math on a computer. It's not going to be long and all these kids will be signing their names as X because they can't handwrite. Pathetic.
