The January 16 Macleans lists snowmobiling under one of the 99 stupid things the government spends money on. This is the letter I sent to the editor.

Dear Editor,
Re: 99 REALLY STUPID THINGS THE GOVERNMENT DOES WITH YOUR MONEY in January 16,2012 issue of Macleans
Some government expenditures may be stupid. Our governments giving back a miniscule portion of what they get from snowmobilers to support snowmobiling is not stupid. Snowmobiling is a major generator of revenue for communities across Canada. Quebec and Ontario have the finest snowmobile trail systems in the world. Communities in every Province and Territory depend on snowmobiling to bolster their economy in the winter and to provide healthy recreation opportunities for young and old. In our small isolated community of 1000 in eastern BC, we welcome 12 to 15 thousand snowmobilers each winter who come from across Canada to ride in the developed riding areas in our surrounding mountains. Our snowmobile areas were not developed with government money but through the support of our community and businesses and with many thousands of volunteer hours donated by snowmobilers over the past 50 years. Our visiting snowmobilers pay for accommodations, pay a trail fee to ride our groomed trails, support our businesses and leave over $1.5 million each year to bolster our local economy. Nationally, snowmobilers spend $6 billion annually in Canada. Our snowmobile area is not unique. Many hundreds of snowmobile clubs and their members have built Canada’s huge snowmobile infrastructure with very, very little financial help from their Governments over the years.
The first snowmobiles were built in Canada and recreational snowmobiling is now enjoyed in the USA, Sweden and Russia. Surely with all the writers who are taking credit for writing the “STUPID” article, one of them could take a serious look at one of Canada’s unique winter recreation activities and its huge economic and health benefits instead of positioning snowmobile support by our governments as a waste of money. They might start by looking at “The Facts and Statistics About Snowmobiling” on the CCSO web site and research and write a positive article about snowmobiling and its benefits to our country.

What about government money being spent on safe places for drug addicts to stick needles in their arms!!!Or the government money that gets spent on some member of the royal family visiting!!!You start thinking about it money spent on sledding would be a hell of alot farther down the list than 99!!:realmad:

Sounds like a typical Maclean's comment. That magazine is a joke. If the writers/editors of it would actually get out of their offices and take a look at things in Canada maybe their view would change.

good on you for sending them a letter to bring it to their attn. I doubt anything will happen as you have to remember sledding to these guys is so far alien to them they cannot comprehend it and the interest it generates as it does not involve sitting behind a desk drinking your espresso in your high rise office building.

It is stupid. Folks that want to make use of snowmobile services should pay what those services cost. Things of this nature are how we went from countries with no income tax (pre-WW2) to ~40% income tax, with no sign of that ever decreasing.

What does the government do with the dollars you spend on regisration for your sled? How about the taxes you pay on fuel for your sled? What about the GST when you buy your sled? As stated in the first post, sledding creates lots of revenue for the government, none of that should be returned to sledding?

Pretty sure pre WW2 we didn't send millions of dollars a year to these piss poor countries that at the end of the day our money is not going to change anything there anyways! Most of these countries end up creating dictators that spit in our face anyways!!If the government kept their nose out of other countries and kept our money here we would have no income tax again!!!Money spent on snowmobiling is nothing compared to what they waste on foreign 'aid'!!!!

All levels of government (municipal, provincial and federal) have for many years been providing grants to non profit organizations (community leagues, theatre groups, recreational associations, etc.) to help fund their activities as long as these activities are legal and benefit a number of taxpayers. This is the type of funding that snowmobile associations receive from governments and it is therefore no different than a community league recieving a grant to build a playground in a community. If providing a grant to a snowmobile association to develop and maintain trails is "stupid" then so is providing a grant to a community league to build a playground, it is just that simple. It is an all or nothing situation, either you provide grants to all non profit organizations that apply, if their operations are legal and benefit a number of taxpayers or you discontinue the grants to non profit organizations altogether. Non profit snowmobile clubs are no less worthy than any other non profit organizations.

If that applied across the board for any unnecessary activity, fine. Let's start with the Arts. If art isn't good enough for people to pay for it, too bad, all funding for the arts should cease immediately. Do you agree?
