Who is pulling a GEARBOX TOY HAULER ????

I am looking into a 5th wheel tandem axle (14000lbs) GEARBOX TOY HAULER and have some questions

I have a GMC 2500 HD Diesel short box 4 door
Payload is rated at 2500lbs

Trailer is 8800lbs dry with 5200lbs cargo
Dry hitch weight is 2000lbs

Questions
1 - On the tandem axle Gearbox rated at 14000 lbs gvwr what is the wet hitch weight? Is it over 2500lbs

2 - what is the actual weight on you rear truck wheels when fully loaded?

The gear boxes like most of the toyhaulers are set up so that when you have them loaded the weight dist is more even........ a dry hitch weight of 2000lbs sounds a bit heavy...... but then again once it's loaded it usually evens out....... what's the GVW for towing for your truck........ cuz 14000lbs sounds like dual material........... that's allot of weight........ we have a 13000lb toyhauler and the only thing that really saves me is the triple axle...and the hitch weight is about 1000- to 1200lbs....depending when loaded or not. I wouldn;t go over what I tow now unless i had a dually.......load range on the back tires would be always maxed out otherwise.

I read one time the hitch weight is 10% of the trailer weight.

Not sure how close that really is..

actuall same as arff....... it's a keystone raptor 3018TT....... not a gear box...... the raptor is a really nice unit IMO.

I'm pretty sure that 5th wheel toying they recommend that 20% of the overall weight is pin weight, and for ball hitch they recommend 10%. you may want to check your hitch to make sure it can handle that much tongue, you may need to upgrade to a class 5 hitch if your truck is 2007 or older. I 0wn a 2007 gmc 3\4 TON Quad cab diesel. In Alberta, if you ever actually get pulled over all they look at is your tires, as long as your tires can handle the weight they are happy. Just put in some air bags they make towing much more comfortable. i came back from Nordegg this weekend. I had two Yamaha grizzlies on a marathon deck , and 4 people and a large dog in the truck with all the gear for a weekend at the cabin. My weight was 2020kg on the front axle and 2480kg on the rear. that in theory puts me 300kg over my gvwr. The truck had no problems with it and the air bags made the drive nice and comfortable. on the way back from the quad rally the weekend before I did the same but i towed out a 7000lb holiday trailer and was 700kg over. the truck still towed it just fine.

Yep airbags are the way to go........plus a heavy TT will break a spring in a place where ya don't want to break a spring.........but since the airbags.... no breaky any springy...

I was using a 07 Power Wagon 5.7 gas

Just picked up a 2008 3500 SRW 6.7 Diesel.

I have not tried the 3500 yet.

Yes but the biggest problem is to many people don't know how to back up a trailer. Or people with short boxes on a 2500 with a 40ft trailer and get pissed off when they can't get in their site when they can barely turn their trailer without hitting the cab

I think before your allowed in the camp site you should have to back through something to show you know how and won't block the road off for hours trying to get in :d

Ya a lot of the trailers now are huge but it doesn't take much room for a 40ft trailer to back in if you know what your doing.

I used to own a 31 foot Gearbox. (actual length was 33ft) 310FS was the model.... I think? Anyway it was a tri-axle with a ten foot garage. Bumper pull. It pulled nice and straight down the highway. I pulled it with a crew cab long box dodge diesel and a ford extended cab long box diesel. Both pulled it well. Both trucks were my work trucks and were usually loaded down with stuff from work so the trucks were maxed out for weight but still handled pulling the trailer no problem. Even in the mountains. I was a good strong well built trailer the only reason I got rid of it was due to the down turn in the economy. Hope this helps with your questions about these trailers.

Just noticed this thread, the actual correct way to see if your truck is okay is by the Cargo rating. My gearbox 385FS had a cargo rating or hitch weight of approx 2400 Lbs and the 3/4 tons highest rating was approx 2300 lbs for a short box extended cab.
So I went with a dually, and it handles awesome.
