I've got a Savage 7mm mag. I find it's really flat shooting, and reliable. Imo-300 mag to much boom. Dad has one, if you hunt mainly big game (moose & elk then sure I guess) but i suppose a well placed .243 could bring down either. It's totally up to you & your preferences.

So using a 300 mag on a deer and picking it up and body slamming it in to ground is bad:confused::confused::confused:

I figure no fooling around,,it's all about the fire power:d

Ran out of cartridges with my 7mm. Shot my deer with my dad's gun. One in the heart. (lots of destruction & wrecked meat.) and once in the head. The whole head went mush and colapsed. But if you like saving money, a 300 mag will do the one shot trick trick.... I like my 7mm mag. It's a happy medium between the biggens (300 mag & bigger) and smallens .243 etc

Thanks for are the replies so far guys, really appreciate it, looks like i will have to look into a 30 06 and a 7mm as well. If i can get a new rifle for this year ill be hunting either deer or elk..

I have a browning 7mm, and my father has a 7mm Mag Husqvarna. The 7mm is probably the better all around gun the Mag is more for larger game imo.

good choice, though I've noticed the 7mm will leave a dear in a bit of a mess if not careful, where as a 30.06 will not be so nasty ;) (plus the shells are cheaper) jmo....I enjoy either of the two rifles myself.

What are you hunting and where? Deer = 7mm or 7stw in the open country. Deer/moose = 300 win mag in the bush. 300 IMO is a great round, lots of rounds to pick from. This was my last rifle due to I reload and wanted a big selection of bullets. I always ran SAKO in most of my rifles. U cant go wrong with a Tika,Sako, weatherby IMO. Are U re-loading or off the shelf ammo?
My next rifle will be a 338 Lupa...just cause its about $10-$15 a shell.

I started with a Ruger .300 win mag, then went to a Savage .270, now I have a Savage .243. Has killed deer, moose and elk,.. if I were to get another hunting rifle, it would be a 25-06 or 7mm-08

i personaly wouold not recomend a 30-06 to ANY hunter, sure thay got a good boom to them but they just dont have the velocity, they cant shoot far. but if your doing close range they would kick a$$ so unless your doing close range i woulds take the 7mm over the 30-06 any day

When it comes to a good gun for yourself u should go shoot a few different calibers and makes! Anyone can tell u what caliber takes what down the best but if the gun doesn't fit u right then its gonna be a really long uncomfortable hunt!
I personally only target shoot but I have tried plenty of makes in the same .270 caliber and my favorite is the mossberg for fit and feel. Everyone is different so u won't know what fits u best till u try a few out!

Good luck and happy hunting :)
