questions about using coal in a outdoor boiler

I have a outdoor boiler that I have been using wood in for the last 7 yrs.
can I mix coal with the wood just by shoveling it in?
or am I better just to go straight coal?

I have no experience with coal so any info would be great

Some models yes you can, I dont know how coal would work in a gasification unit. Also keep in mind coal burns much hotter then wood so be careful as it could over heat or crack a tube if it gets too hot. They do make units that are compatible for both. Call your manufacture see what they have to say.

Yes, check with the manufacturer and see if the metal will take the extra heat produced from burning coal. I have 3 wood burning units and none of mine have the ability to burn coal safely.
