City of Edmoton Noise Bylaw ????

So how exactly are they conducting this test.

We race motocross and there has been a lot of controversy over how the sound testing is to be preformed.
What is being done currently on the tracks is :

Decibal meter is held 90 degrees to the end of the pipe and 30" away.
Bike is held at 2000 rpm a reading taken, this is repeated three times.

The problems with this method are several...modifcations to morors can move the torque curve out of the loud zone. So a bike with aftermarket pipes but bascily stock will be louder at 2000 rpm then a modified motor with a programer and rev extender but with the same pipes. But take the modified motor to 2500 or 3000 and it will come alive and be way over.

Also the power band is different on different brands of bikes, different sizes of bikes and the big one different motor styles....ie a 2 cyl cruiser vs a 4 cyl sport bike...

So measuring them all the same just dosent make sense....

So whats the consesus on here for those that know thier bike wont pass....
....leave alone and hope you dont get tested....
....Put the stock exhaust back on and detune the bike...

Appartently the plans are to make this BS province wide....

Well I am not changing mine, as a matter of fact I just put louder ones on my new Harley. If it is in fact a "Noise Bylaw" then why is it just for motorcycles. Only 2 blocks to 17th St and then into Strathcona County which shocks the hell out of me that they have not put a bylaw in place yet as they are known for banning anything related to motor sports. Guess I won't be able to ride in all the Edmonton charity functions and donate my hard earned money either.

Got to put a stop to the loud bikes and idiots who like to rev them in residental areas at night. I for one am sick of hearing the deafening sound. Some bikes are 10x worse then any vehicle i've ever heard, even in regular driving hearing it over my truck and music, am very tired of it. If people could ride responsibly it wouldn't be a issue. The few wreck it for the many. I just think they should be impounding any bike, car, truck that is causing extremely excessive noise. It would put a nice end to it or even stunting tickets for it.......

But I can tell you right now, I won't put up with loud bikes in my neighborhood. If I know a bike that is loud and likes to roar past my house, I will put a end to it myself.

It sucks for the responsable riders, but o well. It's gone on to long. But I think it should be for cars and trucks to. But the whole "loud pipes save lifes" is the STUPIDEST thing i've ever heard. The noise doesn't do ANYTHING but annoy people. You think someone in a semi can hear it? NOPE! You think a lot of stupid drivers who can't pay attention will notice/know where the noise is coming from? NOPE! Maybe a lot of bikers should stop trying to weave in and out of traffic, i'm bigger I don't give a ch!t if you end up under my truck for driving like a idiot.....

Well like city council, some people paint everyone with the same brush, I by no means roar though residential areas nor do I cut in and out of traffic.

And if we want to talk about idiots lets talk about those truckers who can seem to shift without using the Jake brake around town. Maybe those are the same ones that can't hear the bikes coming? you know I am just painting them all with the same brush, going to need a pretty big impound yard arn't we.

Don't get me wrong I agree some bikes and other vehicles are rude loud and somthing should be done about that. I agree but 92 dbl 30 inches from the pipe, who the hell is that close to the bike.

As for the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" maybe maybe not if you have never ridden a bike how could you comment on this?? There has been times when I know someone does not know you are there and a quick little burp on the throttle gets the attention, I am not saying go blowing by the car that has the window open, after all you may distract them from the phone call they are on or the text they are sending while they are driving 4 feet behind you.

I clearly said it's only the few who wreck it for all

Ride loud if you want. It won't change how I drive. If you want to ride in my blindspot you better move when I want to change lanes......Just another speed bump to me. No i've never riden a bike, but I dahm well know you ain't going to hear ANY bike over most big trucks over their engine considering how loud many of them are.

And don't worry, a loud bike in my neighborhood will be dealt with swiftly, I don't imagine to many would be happy when I just "happen" to pull out in front of them roaring down my street :)

Like it or not, as the smaller vehicle YOU need to pay the most attention. YOU need to make sure you aren't in a trucks blind spot. The idiots in their prius not paying attention to bikes won't pay anymore or anyless if your being loud, they will just hate you even more. They won't be the ones 6 feet under if you don't ride smart. Ain't no skin off my back if someone ends up under my truck because they ride like a idiot. And no, those loud pipes won't do you ANY good driving around me except piss me off and me want to crowd you off the road.

Again, not painting everyone with the same brush, but i've had bikes tailgate me so close I can't see them in ANY of my mirrors, or like always cut me off. I wonder how you will look when your crushed between two vehicles when I can't stop from getting cut off?

O well.....if you don't want to be the many stupid bikers that get hit learn how to ride. A good majority of them are the bikers fault, but the loud pipes are doing you a lot of good.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.....loud ass Diesels should be made to abide to the same regulation as the bikes - 30" @ 2000 rpm, doubt very many would pass the noise bylaw with a 4" exhaust and the turbo spooling up. I'm sick of people and their high idling diesel drowning the street in chug-a-lugging for an hour at 5 am when its -30 C outside.

Find a diesel pickup that is anywhere near as deafening loud as some of these bikes and we'll talk. Even a straight piped truck with stacks, WOT isn't even in the ballpark of some of these bikes......I can hear bikes going down my front street ALL the time from inside loud and clear, can't say i've ever heard a diesel, just the odd rice rocket. Weird.

And as I said, I think it should apply to ALL vehicles, except obviously commercial. But bikes are worst by far.

LOL - seriously? Next time you are at a stoplight by a truck with stacks roll down your window and have a listen. I can hear my neighbours truck (who is across the alley - behind my house) at the front of my house when he is pulling his 39 ft toy hauler in and out of his back yard. Don't tell me I can't hear it, I'll take a video next week for you if you want to tell me what I can and can't hear in my own neighbourhood. Yeah obviously you like big diesels better than rice rockets and crotch rockets or harley's. Guess what? I like to listen to my sled more than my neighbours Cummins with a 4" exhaust. $10 says the crotch rocket guy likes his bike sound better than your truck and better than my sled. A bike goes by your house for what 8 seconds at most? But I have to listen to someone's truck gurgling along in the Safeway parking lot for 30 mins while they are in buying groceries, just so they can keep the A/C running?

What's causing more noise pollution, high decibel squeal for a short time or lower decibel squeal for longer time. Not picking sides because my hillclimb bike is straight piped and I run it up and down the alley every now and then, but it can't all be a one-sided bylaw, it has to be fair for everyone. If they are gonna regulate one group, they should regulate all groups. Fair's fair.

92db at 30" while IDLING.

Pipes could still be pretty loud on the throttle.

I think this will hurt the Harleys more than anyone else.

This bylaw like most was complaint driven. Fact is that City hall has had way more complaints about loud bikes than other vehicles, therefore that is what the law is addressing. I can't believe that people are getting fighting mad about being allowed to make frigging noise because they think it's cool. Grow up man.

It's already against most towns bylaws to use the jake within town limits..
Funny thing, I saw a petition to repeal the Edmonton noise bylaw in a shop here in Whitecourt. It's a City bylaw for crying out loud, not a provincial law. Folks from out of town whose signatures are on the petition will not be counted......dumb.

i'd say put noise restrictions on every vehicle out there, 92 db seems still to load maybe 80 or so. anyone over the limit has there ride run over by a d9, thus no more problem, no arguement. deisel trucks, bikes, quads, lawn mowers, farm equipment, stereos , all should be regulated. just can't understan the bepoppin at the lights, thumpin rap crap, screaming pinko crap from the wanna be boys, who are they trying to impress, most people laugh at them.
