Got to show your work.

8 ÷ 2 (2+2) =
8 ÷ 2 (4) =
8 ÷ 8 = 1

Or

8 ÷ 2 (4)=
4 (4)=
16.

Not sure which is right. I should have a beer or two and think about it.

I'm not a math expert, but I am sure that is where maurfello was going on the previous page.

At least it is a science and not some wishy-washy concept like all the various genders!!

Or

8 ÷ 2 (4)=
4 (4)=. <<<<this is the failure step. 8 is a term, as is 2(4). You settle all terms before proceeding to total them.
16.

You must have went to Thorhild School......
..it's 16.
Says Jim E's calculus classes

ha ha...yah yah...Jim's class...

I am still having trouble agreeing with 16 though

8 ÷ 2 (2+2) =
8 ÷ 2 (4) =
8 ÷ 8 = 1

using the BEDMAS rule (same as today's PEMDAS)
meaning brackets first ...
of course we all agree you do the 2+2 in brackets 1st leaving... 2(4)
then isn't 2(4) still classified as "brackets"?
meaning you convert that to 8 before you go to divide/multiplication
then 8 / 8 = 1

if 2(4) is not classified as brackets/parenthesis, then what is it classified as?...straight multiplication?

2(4) is not considered brackets. It would be written as 2x4. Therefore you perform the operations in order. 8÷2 first and then 4x4 to get 16.
