After what my dad went through this year with my brother passing away, I'd say the best thing would be taking your son and a pack of steaks. Gifts are fun but nothing replaces time together.

Time.

I never understood as a kid why my dad never wanted presents for fathers day, or his birthday, or Christmas. Or when he did want something he wanted boring things like clothes, or socks, or new shoes. Now as a parent myself I'm starting to get it, because as a single income family he ended up paying for those gifts, which meant he had to spend more time at work to pay for them. He didn't want a new fishing rod for fathers day, instead he wanted his old one and the time to spend with us using it.

Absolutely. Time is something money can't buy. We are too smart for our own good when we are younger but once you "grow up" you begin to realize that time and family is important
