Creating an HDR effect

I really want to create an HDR effect with a bunch of my photos, but i dont know any programs to do so. I know that photo shop is one of them, same with another add on to photoshop, but i dont have photo shop either. Is there any other way to create this cool effect for free?

Not to familiar with it, but does the program GIMP have hdr effects? Might be worth checking out.

I do photography on the side and have both PS3 and Photomatix, and hands down photomatix is a better HDR engine than PS3. Did you take a series of the same pictures at different exposure levels? if not then you will not be able to achieve a true HDR.

I use Photomatix Pro by Canon. Came with my SLR. I don't think you can download it off their site though.

thanks for the help guys. I found a website, that is under maintainance, but it does HRD
