The owner of two horses who were rescued from certain death off a B.C. mountainside has been charged with three counts of animal cruelty.

Frank McKay of Edmonton is accused of abandoning the animals just before Christmas near the town of McBride, B.C., where snowmobilers found them trapped in the snow.

They brought feed and blankets for Belle and Sundance while volunteers started digging a one-kilometre trench that took a week to open up a pathway before the horses could be rescued on Dec. 23.


Shawn Eccles, the SPCA’s chief animal protection officer, says the animals suffered from malnutrition and various health issues after being exposed to freezing temperatures.

They received veterinarian care and were recently placed in permanent homes in Prince George and Kamloops, B.C.

Eccles says McKay will make his first court appearance in McBride on June 22.

And........an admission from Mr. McKay, that, in hindsight, he really screwed up. Obviously, at his age, and community role, we'd expect more of a 'leadership', but...........such is life. If he's comes 'straight' with everyone........that's cool.

The court date is June 12, not 22 (that's from the SPCA). I guess it was misquoted in some media. I will be there for sure. Hope many people will.

"The Canadian village of McBride, which rallied behind efforts to rescue two horses trapped in snow, has received a heroism award.

McBride, a small town in Robson Valley with fewer than 1000 people, received the Kevin Anderson Award of Heroism from the British Columbia SPCA at its annual awards evening.

Village residents rallied for what the SPCA called the epic rescue of two abandoned horses last Christmas in the Mount Renshaw snowmobile area."

It sounds like Mackay won't be attending court on June 12. He told the Jasper Fitzhugh that he is not planning to attend his first court appearance and was quoted as saying, "I'm not taking any direct interest in this thing. I'm not the least bit concerned [about the charges]. It's going to be a waste of my time."

Thanks for the update!

"McBride - The case of the Edmonton man charged in connection with the abandoning of two horses in the Renshaw Region near McBride last winter has been remanded until August 14th in McBride Provincial court."

Hopefully, after it's all said and done, Frank MacKay has a nice little donation for the SPCA..........and, springs the bill for about 50 pizza's.....or whatever is enjoyed in McBride.

This post is simply to shout a 'Whoop! Whoop!' to Snow and Mud's resident 'horse expert', 'Falling Star'.

Yeah, you guys and gals sure do know 'snow', and 'mud'......pretty cool!! And, what you did for these horses makes you all 'honorary' rescuers. I'd put that in my resume anyday.

However, the contributions of Birgit Stutz, of Falling Star Ranch, has provided invaluable documentation to this storyline. Whether it be pictures, news links, or comments, she doesn't believe in self promotion, or hyperbole.

Birgit, her comrades, and volunteers, at Falling Star Ranch, absorb the blunt of many, many, abuse cases. In 'fire speak', they are asked to put out the flames, then immediately discern 'arson' from 'accidental'.

Anyway, though I know many of you already know this about 'Falling Star'........I just wanted to post it.

After reading about his driving prowess, Mackay should take a cab to court.

McBride, B.C.- The man facing three charges related to cruelty to animals in the McBride horses case, had another court date today.
Edmonton Lawyer Frank McKay is charged with cruelty to animals, causing unnecessary pain/suffering to an animal and causing an animal to continue to be in distress.
The charges were laid after two horses were rescued from the Renshaw recreation area near McBride last winter. The animals had been abandoned, and were found to be starving, in poor health and stuck in chest deep snow. Volunteers braved brutally cold temperatures as they hand dug a trench more than a kilometre long to walk the horses, Belle and Sundance, to safety. The animals have since recovered and have been placed in new homes.
McKay did not appear in court today, nor did his lawyer. They connected with the McBride Provincial court by phone and had the matter adjourned until December 4th for “anticipated summary resolution” of the matter.


Adjourned again?? Is this some kind of game with him??

I think its a great thing when even lawyers are scared of court dates...ha so there maybe he will be up there hunting again.
