I signed the petition, and it went in, so closing Jan 07, 2013 must be wrong.

All you did was sign a petition. You have in no way submitted a public comment to the decision makers at the link provided.

http://a100.gov.bc.ca/appsdata/epic/documents/p404/1386090523497_56c9490b1493ab69bfcd911ca909b6f80975a9095201b58020739a3907b72ab0.pdf

See, this is why I have very little use for petitions, especially online petitions. Petitions just give people a false sense of satisfaction thinking they've actually participated in the process. If everyone that signed a petition submitted an actual comment to the right place instead they'd have a whole lot more impact on the decision making process.

Better yet, if 2000 sledders showed up at the open house they'd actually have to start giving a crap about us! Until we can make that happen we're spinning our wheels.......well, tracks I guess.

Stand behind your snowmobile clubs and support them. Volunteer with your local club, buy memberships, go to the meetings that your local club have. The best way to save our sport is to back the BCSF/ABC they are the voice that is heard by the Government. Not many of you have even suggested joining a snowmobile club, you are all getting side tracked, the BCSF has been fighting these issues for years and years. This is nothing new!

Absolutely.....but it has to go further. It doesn't matter how many members or how much money your club has if the same one or two people are the only ones that ever show up to public meetings or open houses or information sessions. That is our one best time to stand up and be counted....and for the most part we're ignoring it. The greens capitalize on these opportunities big time...have been for years. That's why they get noticed and we don't.

When was the last time you saw a public protest by snowmobilers on the news? Never!

Not to be a prick but this is the problem the BCSF and ABC have been dealing with. We are not united, and the greenies and government knows this. All this talk about public protests and such is just talk, if you cant or wont support your local club (which also supports the BCSF or ABC in our fight to save our sport) how are you or anyone else going to get guys/gals to public protest do you really think that will ever happen????? Purchasing memberships helps pay for legal council and other avenues to fight closures. JM2C

From what I have heard about the bcsf and ABC they need to join together. Quit bickering between them.

We sledders need to get someone elected and be on the inside. There is no one there standing up for us. I agree with just about everything in this thread and the more it is brought up the more people are going to clue in. I'm from Alberta and go to the mtns as much as I can. I have been a member of a club in BC for years and try to get my AB buddies to buck up too. If nothing else the money and the numbers help, as was stated earlier.
Thanks to all of you for doing what you do.

I went to the site and this is what I found

The public comment period regarding the Proponent's supplemental Application Information Requirements for the proposed Garibaldi at Squamish Project is open from December 8, 2013 to January 7, 2013.

Is it over, or has some nitwit put in the wrong dates?

No, the public comment period runs from Dec 8th- Jan 7th, there is an open meeting at the Railway Museum in Squamish on Dec 18th, from 12 PM-8 PM, if anyone is local, (lower mainland & sea-to-sky) that is a great time to have your voice heard. If the gov gives this development the green light, they will have lost any credibility to persecute snowmobilers for environmental issues, lets use this opportunity to take the high ground. The BCSF and ABC should be all over this,......if we all get behind this one and loose it, lets make sure this is a decision the government will never forget...........REMEMBER BROHM RIDGE????? I would imagine this would give snowmobilers the legal grounds to challenge any further actions taken against snowmobiling in the Province under the banner of environmentalism as it is the ultimate case of hypocrisy.

Hey Hey Hey.... speak for yourselves.. we are making leaps and bounds and forging a common ground to be productive and proactive for our sport. I recently spent some time at the Timmys telethon with Erin Heart, and we are all on the path of moving forward. I believe we have a mutual respect and some really positive peeps within our organizations.
I for one am thankful that we have great leadership and this will all be for the best. The past is behind us, and I am looking forward to a strong voice from our Snowmobile community as ABCSnow and BCSF bring it.

Just a question, what involvement have you had with your club?
Because I know Moyiesledhead is very active within the Cranbrook and Moyie clubs and has been for years. I sat beside him for 5 years during the most painful negotiations you can imagine trying to save as much riding area around Cranbrook and Kimberley as possible from the dreaded Caribou habitat monster. When he tells you what doesn't work he is speaking from painful experience.
As to how to get more new blood involved in clubs, that my friend is the 6 million dollar question.

We are really gaining momentum with our Kokanee country club here. So many people coming out this year to support the club. It's pretty awesome. I think we may be in a pretty good position politically right now, in respect to the caribou closures in this area. Science is not really on their side, and the epic failure, and death of so many caribou has really not won them any political favour. I would love to capitalize on any momentum we have and try to make stuff happen. Public perception, and pouncing when opportunity is upon us can perhaps make a difference. I do know that theory isn't backing fact when it comes to these animals, and the non sledding public is catching on. Something has to give. All I can say is be the best representative for the sport you can, be loud, active and try. I am thankful for you Mr. Cat and Moyie, you guys have put so many hours into this.. I think of you guys when we're in meetings. We just keep moving forward and believe that we can do this.

Thre is a comment section on the petition. I commented to the effect that there was enough development in the area that was taking away from the reason people like the area in the first place.

Not side tracked at all.
Everyone should join their local snowmobile club, absolutely.
The force of numbers, just like the eco clubs numbers, does work, however to get the Minister/government to end the ban on snowmobiling, I would like to see everyone regularly emailing the Minister asking to end the snowmobile restriction as the regulations do no good.

All of these problems are common to all of the different moterized recreation groups. End of the day it is the y2k -headwaters crowd thats wants to shut everything down for all the groups. They do not evan want hikers in.
The use of science to proof their values are right versus using science to find the truth.
Currently under the ssrp proposed wildlands , the entire divide between kananskis country and waterton park on the alberta side will be a park. Effectivly shuttin down all motorized recreation in these areas.
Common themes are protect biodiversity and protect grizzly bear habitat , caribou habitat.

I had a thought this morning. While we need to focus on the areas that we risk losing right now, how about a positive momentum movement focused on what we have. I'm going to propose this in our area right now. Instead of waiting for an area to be at risk, step ahead of the game and claim publicly the land we are using, thankful for, to let it be known that we have a large voice, and user group willing to stand up for what we have.
Instead of having a conflict based uprising, have basically a staking claim to what we have, so no one could plead ignorance and say, "oh.. I didn't know people used this land".
build our voice from there. I hate reacting in fear, knee jerk rushed and angry. I want to present with strength. a We are HERE , we Use this, and we are Grateful for this land movement.

Living two provinces over doesn't help for clubs, but i have signed petitions and have been looking for ways to help.

Thanks for helping out.
Every situation has strength, and I think it could be quite effective if you were to email the Minister and just ask questions about snowmobile restriction that were instituted under the Minister of the Environment regulations. You are the tourist that the BC government wants to come to the province, so I'm sure they would be delighted to send you some hogwash. And I would like to see what they send to tourists. I'm sure we could ask some hard questions from their response. The beauty of email over paper.
