Good afternoon guys and gals.

A buddy and myself are looking into coming out west for the first time this winter and were thinking of heading into the Golden area.

We are both decent riders but neither of us have any time in the mountains. Years ago my dad and uncles would do a Golden trip every year and have always talked about the good times they had. My question for you all is, what are the areas in and around Golden that two guys looking to plan their first trip out west be riding?

Clearly we know our boundries and aren't looking into getting in over our heads, but we'd like to hit up some deep snow and get off the trails a bit too.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

there is actually a 'Newbie Ride' being held in Golden on February 23. There will be sled demo's, beacon basin work shops, lunch and some other stuff going on. Contact Taminator here on the site for more info.

Quartz Creek is probably the best riding area for newbies. Its 40km past Golden on hwy 1, look for the blue sign. Short trail ride, nice cabin, hard to get lost in, and still has some pretty decent terrain.

My 2 cents.

X2 quartz is good and easy access!

when u thinking on going out, golden is a great area, definitly get someone who has been there, as it is dangerous under certain conditions.

imdoo'n , we don't have a specific weekend picked out per-se...we're just in the planning stages so far.

And yeah, we were both thinking of seeing if we could find someone to tag along with once we picked a weekend. Although this "newbie day" sounds like it might be a good start for guys in our position.

Oh for sure! A pair of '96 MXZ's w/ 126"x1" tracks and....

nah I'm kidding. ;P

I'm on an '04 Summit 800 151x2 and Justin is on an '03 Mountain Max 600 144x2" so we may not be hanging with the biggest of the boys but I'm sure there's still somewhere for us to get into some fun?

oh you should be good with the sleds ya have. i've been out there on 121 sled tracks and had a great time, just keep the throttle pinned. stuck lots but had a great time. the new rider would be ideal start, should be in safer areas to get your bearings and feel for the snow depth. definitely ride with someone from the area or who has been there. red deer suds buds where thinking on another trip out but nothing definite yet.

Cool. Please keep us in mind if you guys choose to go out that way :)

Give me any sled and any reasonable amount of snow and I'll find a way to have fun. Give me a space-machine (how I feel on my sled) and a butt-load of snow and I'm not so sure what I'll do with myself! Excited to give it a try.

Haha, gets stuck from time to time does he? I'll have to pick one of those up.

If you don't want anything too technical, and a safe riding area, you can also try susan lake, blaeberry, west bench trail.

Here is a page to look at for golden.

Ok, so we decided on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd coming up here.

Sounds like Imdoo'n and Macronut may be out that way the same weekend to take a couple newbies under their wings. If that is the case, we're grateful for the company!

Won't lie, pretty damn excited :)

We were at Gorman yesterday and it was an awesome area for the non-awesome mountain rider. Tons of area, almost no trees, two huge bowls that make keeping track of your group and navigating around super easy. I would totally recommend it to people new to mountains, in fact this is where I'll bring my dad and his buddies if I can ever get them to try the mountains.

Gorman is not a newbee area at all.

Or even the non awsome rider either.

Very remote and not good if something bad happens.

It can be the best and or worse place to go.

There's more than 2 bowls but that all u need to know.

When you cross the Lake, were you into the left hand area or right hand area? Sounds like you were into Upper Holt, if you went up left once you crossed the lake...
