I mounted mine about 6 inches above gas cap so it's directly in the middle and out of the way.

I have experienced the hooking on the bars, etc.. It is a real pita but not as bad as having no tether in the case of emergency.

I now have two cords tied together so that it is longer and it works much better. I got the second one from a decommissioned/totalled sled.
