Hmm, so are these wolves pet wolves with a taste for caribou?

Wolves don't purposely target Caribou. They're incidental prey when they come down lower in elevation to where the wolves are preying on other ungulates in the spring and fall. Caribou don't die in the winter, they get eaten the rest of the year. Yes, mixing of spring and fall habitat between Caribou and other ungulates has been caused by logging, but protecting more habitat without controlling predators will do nothing to help Caribou. Takes 100 years to restore old growth forest. Takes two minutes for a wolf to kill a caribou.

But it's not about Caribou anyway.

Apparently in the lower mainland you can't even protect your livestock against black bears.

These liberal eco warrior protestors are gonna let the preditors go unchecked till bears have to start eating wolves.

Dont see anything in that article about protecting livestock. But then I dont consider bees livestock. That being said if your going to grow something that attracts them you need a better deterrent than shooting them. Pretty sure you can't shoot bears that are eating out of orchards just because they are eating the fruit. That article kind of amounts to same thing for me.

Every area should have a secret black bear hole . So that when you shoot another one of these useless pests, that do nothing but wreck anything they come upon , you can drag the damn thing to the hole and shovel and shut up. The people in charge of managing our wildlife have lost touch , maybe step out of the pickup and off the pavement a couple times and see for yourself instead of giving credence to every special interest group that stumbles in. Example, the caribou issue, what a joke, the caribou are doing the same damn thing, on the same route that they've been doing for 700 years, and the protected wolves certainly appreciate that. 25 years ish of sledding all over western Canada and I've seen 5 caribou in the mountains, hundreds on the hi way when heading home, and a few in the high country while on an atv. Meanwhile the budget dollars allotted to caribou management has been in the millions, with little to no real effect.

It isn't hard to figure out where MyCrestonNow stands on the issue. Another left leaning, agenda perpetrating news outlet. Trish has one quote and Bergenske has three. No mention of how many years the BCSF has worked on the project.

I have to say that Juice FM treats me very well, always allowing me to reach out with Avalanche information, membership stimulus and other snowmobile related things as well as my work with human wildlife conflict. I'm happy I was included for sure. It's a tough area to live in, and broadcast in, for the broadcast area includes Nelson where many live and breathe WildSite propaganda.

I would agree and generally speaking, I would have to put Fernie in the same boat. The out spoken peeps are very green and I am sure if they had their way they would shut the mines down, close down forestry, and have a big park from the border up through to Kananaskis. It is and will be a tough battle for sure.

And the plot thickens! South Purcell herd drops from 16 to 4 in one year. 4 to go and they can stick our "voluntary" snowmobile closures! Sure glad we won the fight against legislating our closures for the most part. (That's around Cranbrook for those that don't know.)

http://www.summit107.com/news/east-...outh-purcells-species-effectively-extirpated/

"While 2017's count found 16 of the animal, Conservation Director John Bergenske says there are now only three males and one female.
He says it is common knowledge that things like logging, recreation, and climate change have been dwindling their numbers in recent years."

No John! It's common knowledge that predators have been eating them!

Oh man my friend, the plot is so thick you could walk on it now. I think it is truly a sad day when efforts made by so many stakeholders, who sit around the table, trying to come up with a viable solution (the Mountain Caribou Progress board) when efforts are tainted and twisted by, I'll just say it, completely delusional activists trying to appear as all knowing. One in particular seems to have surfaced. Now he is vocal and presents himself as a champion of the Mountain Caribou. Lives in Texas, and has a brain injury and I suspect whoever is feeding him his "information" may be using him as a pawn to skew actual conservation efforts. You'll see the organizations he supports and endorses, and no surprise Wildsite is among them.
It appears he may be in charge of this facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/SaveTheCaribou/
(I found this out by calling a few biologists who have been targeted by him in the past) This page is the platform confidential information was leaked to the general public regarding the Purcell census. The post leaked the number of animals, but then put it's own twist on what the outcome of the census would entail. To date, there has been no decision as to the fate of the 3 animals in the Selkirk Herd, or the 4 from the Purcell herd. This is how political activism works. Skew the optics, and pressure the government into appeasing the squeaky wheel. I hope for the sake of caribou and the environment the powers that be say.. enough is enough. I also hope there is some sort of punishment for the breach of confidentiality in the process as well. That is just my opinion, but if the BCSF breached confidentiality, do you think we'd still be invited to sit at the table?
Why would anyone leak confidential information, and twist information by those trying to work towards a long term conservation solution for Mountain Caribou? Who initiated the leak? Great questions, but it comes down to one common denominator. When eco activists manipulate the conservation process animals die.
There's a lot of snowmobile blaming, industry blaming, and poor little wolves on this page. If you do engage, I'd ask that you be respectful. I suspect that this man is the victim of eco manipulation and could potentially be mentally unstable.
He does have a Youtube channel. I present to you, the face of the all-knowing activist who recently had a submission published in the Nelson Star.

Since when is a Caribou census confidential information? When I was dealing with Leo on Caribou it was always public domain, and should be.

There was an agreed upon protocol to deliver census information.. while it's not ooooo drop the bomb top secret espionage information, there is a protocol that was breached. Not only breached, but breached to a nut job who twisted information, making it seem like fact. You have people like the BCSF, and the Ministry preparing for a press release and communication with the general public, and joe crazy pants presents the information, in his own way, without fact. That is pretty damaging to the entire process, and puts a huge level of mistrust in the process from all involved.

So here's my case and point.(bear with me, as I haven't had enough coffee in me yet, and I've received 2 phone calls regarding caribou) This activist page is pointing the fingers at our user group, and some going so far as to say we, snowmobilers have poached and killed the caribou. Apparently, a radio interview this morning, mentioned the accusations in their broadcast. If people, who are not directly involved in the process, but spew information that is incorrect, but seen as truth it's a very sad day for conservation. The numbers he published were correct, but the plan of action moving forward he described was completely off track. Nothing has been decided upon yet, as stakeholders including industry and the BCSF are still providing feedback and recommendations to the ministry and the Federal government.
If it could simply be about a successful conservation initiative that would be great, but that isn't the reality when eco activists twist and turn the facts with only half truths.

With the missing animals, I had heard rumors that I followed up on. The individual that contacted me, indicated that animals had been removed from our area, and translocated to a different area. I asked questions, tried to find out if there was truth to this accusation. I hit several dead ends, but I was diligent and communicated my concerns to ministry officials and biologists, and of course the BCSF board of directors.

What would be the gain from moving the animals in secret? Fingers! Finger pointing at us. When CBC's Bob Keating was asking me questions yesterday morning, there was a LOT of questions surrounding compliance to closures, and thank GOD we, as a user group did amazing, but for a couple incidents that involved riders with an eff you like attitude. To be able to present the fact that we have been working very hard with compliance helps our user group out so much. Closures suck, but because riders in our area have been very diligent the ammunition that normally would have been used to back the theory that "snowmobilers poached the caribou" doesn't hold a lot of weight.

To all those who have abided by closures, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We have lost the absolute best riding we had on the North Side of the Kootenay Pass. I still have tears when we drive by the Bayonne staging area. Closures without purpose suck, but when we show our willingness to work with the process, we are in essence, helping ourselves for the long term.
