Just heard on the news, that this afternoon. the Bow was flowing at 513 cubic meter's/ minute.

I'm not a mathalete....... But I do know that that is a large volume of water!!!

The sheep river was running more than that yesterday .
The Sheep River is flowing at 900 cubic metres per second (cms) and Alberta Environment expects the river to crest at approximately 10:00 pm at 1300 cms and therefore evacuation for these areas is both precautionary and necessary. A reception centre has been set up at the Okotoks Recreation Centre for evacuees that need shelter.

And the Bow, has still not crested. The elbow has, but is still continuing with the same volume of water as this afternoon.

No I was there and I have that same picture. I had to turn and go up the on ramp at 32 ave and that is where that pic was taken. The deerfoot has not flooded in that area at all today. I just drove by there again 45 minutes ago. Just can't believe everything you see on the net.

Awe makes sence. Glad I don't live there

Your info is incorrect. It is actually flowing 1750m3/s where the two rivers meet. the bows max before it crests is 1600ish.

Quick math here. A standard semi trailer holds approx. 97m3 of cargo(volume). The bow is flowing 1750m3/s. divide it out and you got roughly 18 semi trailer loads of water ever second coming into cow town. :d

Could be wrong in my math though...

are you serious? they would risk more damage if the bridge collapsed??
I think he is, there is more than 1/2 of the tracks covered by the train this afternoon. If they have moved it back, that I don't know???

yeah that pic i posted on can-am talk .com.. i said that too.. the train was put there to keep the bridge stable.. and tonight when i drove over the mayland heights bridge the train was all the way over with only cars sitting on it now... the engines are about a 1/4 mile further ahead now...

I can see the purpose of that....

It would move the center of gravity, more to the tracks and to the pillers in the sediment. I think it would be more stable, but I could be wrong with this too.....

There was a picture I saw as well that showd the a cabin and trailer floating I the water at the Clearwater trading post as well

Rigg street is closed at the bridges ( probably need another bridge again maybe)

Traveling is not advised and they recommend no random camping

The train will add stability to the bridge since its design is based on vertical loading and not side loading. The bridge wasnt designed for side loading, and the more overall mass the bridge has, the harder it will be to move. 1000 tonnes of train should help.... If you push a stick into the mud in the bottom of the stream, eventually the stick will fall over. If you put your hand on the top of the stick, putting vertical pressure on it to help stabilize it, it will stand for a lot longer.

The train folks will be watching the bridge closely you can bet, and if there was a risk of it collapsing they would likely pull the train off if its collapse was imminent. Keep in mind these bridges are struck by massive ice flows each spring and they have been standing for many years.

Yes it is, but looking at the news Global Calgary. I would find an alternate route.

I'm also tempted to go drive around and have a bit of a looksy, but not sure yet?
