Wood Pelet Stoves

Recently renovated our living room which had an old wood burning fireplace. Replaced it with an Osburn pellet stove. Cost approx. 3k installed. This winter was the first one we used it. So far I'm very impressed with the operation of it. I did the wood stove thing for many years, cutting trees, splitting, hauling, and having enough ahead of time. Doesn't matter how you look at it, this was alot of work. I have a gas furnace in our 2-story house and the pellet stove as a supplementary heat source. The furnace rarely kicks in. Pellet stove heats very well, and cleaning is a breeze. I buy the pellets buy the pallet, have a dry place to store them. In my opinion, this is a whole lot easier than dealing with wood. The only con with this stove is the electronics on it. Mine is fairly new, so far no trouble, but like all high tech things, it will break down. But until that happens, I think installing a pellet stove was the wise choice.

What are you paying for pellets. Im might go south of the border next year and buy some pellets cause they are cheaper down there. I have seen them for as low as 90/ton.

Ouch ya for something that there is an abundance of in this country, we sure get taken. There is pellet mills that cant even sell pellets this year cause there is so many. They should be about 1/3 of that and i bet those mills would never shut down.

hey, mike we have two pellet stoves, and love them. we dont use them for primary heat, but when there on they put out big time,

reasons i went for pellet stove instead of wood.

- dont need to buy chainsaw to go hunting trees
-dont like splitting wood- too lazy
-wood stove piping and installation for the two stove would have been 7900
thats with out the stoves!
-buy the pellet bags in bulk(pallet load) and youll save at least abuck
- im thinking about a storage bin in the yard then it would be cost effective to heat all the time
- cleaning a pellet stove- dumbing the ashes - cleaning the chiminey is way easier than a wood stove.

and their lighter to carry in an im all about less work for less money....

It is vented the same way as a wood stove .Through the cement or in my case, my basement is part wood and concrete.The vent pipe is only 4'' so the hole through your wall is alot smaller than a wood stove chimney.I don't know how to cut and paste but just type in Pellet stove installation and there is a number of ways to install it.Hope this helps.Or if it is upstairs there is ways to do it that way as well.

Does your basement have concrete walls right to the ceiling.?I am sure the builder would charge you an arm and a leg for installation...They are pretty easy to install yourself..

the one in our basement is ran through out masonary chimney. We had to install a Class B SS vent line in it, but it wasnt that bad. The venting for both stoves cost me 2400 with the wall thimbles and the WETT inspections. The total cost for both Harman PC 45 stoves was about 9000 installed and inspected. Now we used to heat out house with oil(diesel) and it cost us about 250L month(250x1.16= 290 month) now with using grain, it costs us about 300 winter(7 months) to heat the house with power. So i figured it would only take us 5 years to pay back the stoves. Worth while in my mind since i dont have natural gas at my place and it would cost me another 4000 to run natural gas just to my shop and another 2000 to get it to the house plus 2 High efficency furnaces. So nat gas was gonna cost me around 15+ by the time it was all said and done and then i would still have another bill to pay each month.

And btw, i get the 1.16 for oil cause thats what we were paying when we installed the pellet/grain stoves. it has since gone down to around that .84/L make.

if in a basement you should be ok going out through a wall thimble just above grade and up the wall 7 ft and then 90/45 temination..or directly out if no chance ok traffic /kids etc...the wall thimble and wall brackets and pipe should not be costly..almost all pellet stove exhaust issues should be able to be dealt with easily by a qualified installer for under a grand...and wood stoves...heck a twenty ft stack of the good stainless Excell/flashing/storm collar/rain cap/ceiling support/radiation sheild/roof brace if needed and the ultra black to hook from the stove to the Excell will be around 3 grand min easily for materials and installation..i just might remove my oil moniter and put in a nice small Viesmann vitorun 100 boiler and just have a run of fin on the wall in the same room as my wood stove and just distribute the fin heat with a few booster fans in a little bit of 4 in duct work....but yes wood is alot of work...but i want to get a blaze king with the big fire box to get 14 hr burns on pine or spruce...those new cataletic wood stove burn very very clean

In response to Catzuki, I recently purchased a pallet of pellets from co-op in Leduc for $200. Works out to 4$ a bag. I've seen them for as much as 7$ a bag if bought separate. So if you can get them cheaper lent me know.

How many are on a pallet? I asked the guys at home hardwear and they said the price is the same if you buy a skid or just buy them by the bag

I use Pinnacle pellets, the 100% Fir and they rock!! Way more heat Way less ash, just more efficient to burn, bag lasts a few more hours a day cause stove is turned down.

Wish i had a few bags left right now! Man its chillin again.

I have heard you can get them in bulk with your grain truck!

Website shows them loading onto a ocean freighter like grain in a water tight hold. Grain truck should not be a problem

It would be great to get a bunch together and order a semi load from pinnacle. I would be in for a couple pallets. We could go get them with a grain truck but everyone still has to get them into their houses and bagging them wouldn't be fun! We use a pellet stove insert to heat an addition and we really like it. Probably not the most economical but we like the ambiance from the stove as well. Low clearance requirements make far a smaller hearth. We have a very high end unit installed for about $4K.
