This is a new section to Snow and Mud.com. Thanks Ron for putting it on
We all know that our recreation is under attack in many places. BC has the caribou Alberta has landuse framework program as well as many others. Local issues as well as provincial or state issues can all be posted here for all to see.
We all need to become way more vocal to try to stop the loss of our riding areas and our opportunties to enjoy our way of recreation. We all need to do more or time will come where we only have our own yard to ride in.

Well here goes. The Athabasca Trail Consevation Society ( don't let the name fool you, we're 95% off highway bikers and 5% quads ). has been trying to get a desinated staging area for the past 2 years or so. Did all the paperwork, environmental studies, Aboriginal consultation, legal survey etc etc.
Great, SRD approves it , then we get a letter saying, pay up just over 10 grand as a damage deposit. No buildings are going in, just some gravel rejects. The want the deposit ( which we would get back in 35 years, the length of the lease ). We're a pretty low key group, money is raised by memberships, we have about $2500 in the bank. Can't use grants or casino money to pay for this either. The group has probably well over 5000 hours in volumteer time clearing trail, and building corduroy ( all material donated ) .

So we get the AOHVA association to fire off a letter ( thank you ) basically saying groups are doing all this work for free, but you guys are throwing up road blocks. I haven't heard back from the minister of SRD or our local MLA yet on this, sent the letter about 6 weeks ago.

Now hears the kicker, the site is about 13 acres, mostly treed with a big ravine running through it ( we screwed up the survey a bit, but it would cost 3 grand to fix and re-submitt ), its never going to be deveolped. So we have about 8 acres of flat usable space. We want the area to be available to the public. If we make the site for the exclusive use of the club, ( according to a July 2001 Public Lands document ) rental rate is 5 dollars per acre, minimum $50.00 per year.

Nice Eh.

I wonder if its not too much trouble if Admin could send an email to every member bringing attention to this issue... I'm almost positive not all 40,000 members are active on the forums.....

Oh and perhaps move this section to the top or even just below "Introduce yourself" Just to ensure additional exposure...
