I'm looking at picking up an older sled, thinking of a 90's or early 2000's Indy 500. Just for trail riding, don't think I'll go to the mountains so don't need a long track. What years are best? What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance!

If you can find a good shape 89 get it. They ran like a top but not sure how many of them are still around.

I've got a 1990 500. Love the old girl. Runs like a top haven't put a cent in since I bought it and have even had her up close to 8000' with out rejetting. Needs a new hood but would consider selling for the right price. Has a single place trailer that goes with it

I can't remember the year but it was when Rick Mears spun and won the race. Never forget that 500 as long as I live......

I might be interested, can you give me some more details and maybe a pic or 2, thanks. Btw, I met some of the GBCA at the jamboree this year, you guys did appear to be a really big deal!

I'm open to newer sleds too, just looking for some schooling. 500, maybe a 700. Don't want to drop a lot of cash, just a decent machine and reliable. Should I be looking at gen2 machines?

I would have to check miles in it and get some recent pics. And of course get the ok from the gf to sell her sled and upgrade it for her. See what I can do tomorrow

Had a 91 500 EFI and it was trouble free as well but I have no idea how the EFI system held up over time.

I had a '90 carbed model and it was awesome in it's day! Buddy had a '92 EFI and it ran great too. Don't think you can get parts or support for those old EFI systems any more though, and they wouldn't run without a battery.

1989 Indy 500 was the fastest out of the box Indy 500. They were tuned a bit too good and the rpm's would creep up and take out the primary. Did my clutch a couple times, then Polaris did a recall and detuned them by retarding the timing.....weights became bushed soon after as well...... I had a 1990 and it was a good sled. Had a 1992 EFI 500 and it was ok but nowhere as good as that 89..... I could hit 88-89 mph on the radar gun when 650 triples were hitting 91-92 on the same day.

92 was the first EFI model. 89 seemed to make the most power. Had a 90 and 91 model and had no problems with them. Picked up a 91 and a 89 this summer for the grandkids. Have finished a complete redo on the 91 and just starting on 89. Good reliable machines. Don't really like the body style of the Evolved chassis though.

I had a 92 500sp, what a great sled. I put a 141 on it and ran 2" plastic paddles, it worked great and it would climb.

my 92 had over 16,000 miles on it when it burnt up in the garage fire last November, heres pic. picked up a 93 last month for $200 ., with 4000 miles on it. was missing tie rod ends , coil and plug wires. installed a new battery, drained the old fuel out and it started 2 pulls just needs to find better looking hood or sand this down and repaint,

My '96 carbed Indy was a great sled. Ran like a top, had reverse which was nice for on/off the truck or trailer and storing under the deck. Gear case liked to make metal for some reason though and never ever did find out why. Just kept cleaning the dipstick magnet off and changing the oil periodically and she kept going. Liked to eat headlight bulbs too about two sets a winter but other than that it didn't owe me a dime.
