With everything that has happened over the past week at Mcbride, I took a moment to evaluate my gear - particularly as seen in an emergency situation. I travel with all the gear - avy pack (tested), beacon, probe, shovel, and garmin 650. We in our group have ast-1 training, and do the best we can to plan our trip and understand the snow conditions. However, looking over my gear I paused at my garmin 650. If I or we were in an emergency situation how would I communicate quickly with the outside world to send help? Ok..... Enough. I find it hard to believe that this expensive device does not have the ability to communicate with SAR , similar to the spot device. It does everything else (within reason). I understand it communicates with other garmins, but there is no single "emergency" button. I wish garmin would update their software to include such a button and also develop something similar to the spot, but integrated into the (in my case) 650.
I would be interested in anyone else's thoughts.
