engine rebuild questions

hi i am used to rebuilding my sled motor and i have not touched a atv so i have some questions

my quad still runs but not well. so when you rebuild the engine do you
relace
pistions and ring or just the rings
do you do anything with the valves
should i worry about the crank if the bearing still seam good?

any info would be great. thanks

you replace whatever is Worn is this a 4stroke or 2stroke and what kind of atv?

what is exactly wrong with you atv what symptoms does it have?

it is a 05 sportsman. it highmilage runs, but runs really rough, does not have power like it use to. it some times needs the choke half way to get the bike rolling. thanks for the fast reply

i cant tell you the compression or anything like that at the monent. the bike not at home. i hoping to get it home in a week or two.

Does it smoke a lot? Noisy (ticking, knocking)? Using lots of oil? Could just need a new cam and chain, valvetrain adjustment/repair. How many miles on this thing?

ya it smokes quite a bit. on idle and when you give it gas. ticking does ring a bell, but the quad been parked for about 5 months so i dont remeber about the ticking or the mileage on the bike. what kinda job is it to replace the cam and chain??

I would do a compression test, if it is low do a leakdown test and see if it leaking out the intake or exhuast or past the piston rings
