I want to put some dvd's on my laptop so I dont have to bring a bunch of dvds with me to watch away from home. Is there a way to do this with out 5-o smashing down my door? Please be gentle, I'm kinda computer dumb.

You can do it legally your just not allowed to share them with other people or put them online for other people to access. Most new DVDs have a digital copy that's meant for putting on your hard drive.

Google "rip DVD"....lots of software available. Most copyrighted disks won't rip. I like to rip to an AVI file as they take up less space.

Easier idea: just download Utorrent (I like that torrent software best as it is quite small) then just download the movies you want....ya, it's "illegal" but if you own the movie already 5.0 won't be mad at ya. Every movie you have on DVD is already floating around ripped to AVI.

magic dvd ripper is what I use, works great, and as everyone here says, as long as you own the movie, its not illegal to have a copy on your computer.
