dual wheel or single rear wheel ??

I'm buying a new truck ...
most Likey a Dodge mega cab..

I do not have a deck ...
I have a 32 foot fifver ...

but one day may upgrade to 2 quad on a deck and a bumper hitch RV

gut tells me to get a dually , is towing that much better?


will be making a lot of long some holiday trips
(Alaska, redwoods, mount rushmore, yelowstone , eastern canada)

I like my srw 3500 so I can park in the garage easier.

I don't like the dually but like he says for towing it is like night and day, and safer if you get a flat tire.

Only downside to a dually is daily driving it in a city, and buying tires.

One thing I find with a dully is the tire don't track the same and hinders it in snow and mud

For towing big or towing with a big load on the rear axle a drw is the way to go. But can be done on a srw 3500 too. I would air bag it which ever route you go. Daily driving a drw is a pita but also not impossible.

it can be done with srw have to watch to keep it legal though just went to drw myself and wish i would have done it before there is no comparison (dont have to gag the wife anymore)lol:cool:

I have a SRW 3500 mega cab, thought it would be more that enough......Fail! Box full of wood, Honda generator, Cooler, kid,dog, wife and all her junk,1000# hitch weight fromm 10000# Hoilday trailer. Now want to put RZR on deck. SRW wont work even if you go by tire ratings @ 3650 each. So Im selling my SRW for a Dually. So if you think you will have a hint of needing DRW save the $$ and do it now!

Go big or go home!! F450 works for me, rated for 24,000 trailer, 33,000 gcvw and tighter turning radius that a SRW short box. Only drawback is the deep gearset at 4.30 it's a little much unless your towing everyday which I do, anywhere from 10,000-30,000lbs trailers everyday. With my 3814 raptor toy hauler (40ft triple axle) 20,000lbs loaded I wouldn't dare pull it with a SRW, and anybody that says they can safely is a f**ktard!!
The stability is well worth the hassle of the size of the truck!

I bought my 43 foot inferno toy hauler before I bought my truck and I'm glad I went with the DRW 3500 Megacab with 4:10's and added air bags as she pulls that trailer beautifully. Just sucks for driving around town as it loves to drink the fuel with such low gears, but pulls solid even fully loaded I'm guessing it's over 20000 as it's 14700 dry. Pulled this fully loaded on a windy day and barely noticed the cross winds, it's well worth it if your pulling/loading heavy ch!t.

Aren't you worried about the gvw of your raptor as the chassis and axles are only rated for 16500? In an accident you would be held liable wether your truck could pull it or not safely. Max weights are there for a reason. Have you weighed your set up or are you just assuming weight?

It's a triple axle with 3 6000 or 7000lb axles, I'm not exactly sure which but they are at least 6000lb which would put me at 18000 lbs with 15-20% of that weight on the truck which doesn't even come close to putting it over weight. The trailer is aprox 14000 lbs empty with a teryx 4 and quad and misc in the garage coming in at around 2500lbs, a 135 liter fuel tank on the trailer for roughly another 300lbs It has a 110 gallon fresh tank at 1100 lbs with all the other bs that goes in its damn close to 20000 lbs and I wouldn't dream of pulling it with anything less than a 3500 DRW

Here are the weights from the last time I hit the scales
Holiday Trailer Weights
Front. 2720kg
Drives. 3620kg
Trailer. 6840kg
Total 13,180 kg / 28966lbs minus truck at aprox 8000- 8500lbs = 20,400-20,900 lbs

I pulled a 28' toyhauler with a single wheeled 3/4 ton- bad idea, started to sway really bad at 100km even with a sway bar and equalizer hitch. Scared the shet out of my and never pulled it again until i replaced the truck with a dually, what a big difference. I love the duallys but it does come at some disadvantages, 6 tires to replace, sucks in the snow and mud as the rears seem not to grip well at all. parking is a pain in the butt and driving in the winter with the windrows in Edmonton sucks too. All that being said i would never go back to single wheel rears as I love the piece of mind hauling heavy loads. I get good fuel mileage with my truck, 19 to 21 mpg around town and back and forth to Spruce Grove so it was actually cheaper to run than my wife's Infiniti G35 she used to have.
